Mein erstes Westshiteauto (My first West German shiter)

Hello autoshiters,

Been a lurker for a while enjoying reading some of the threads on here and feeling homesick looking at Stuboy's and Vantman's spotted threads from my home county.

Anyway this is my german motor which currently falls firmly in the shite category. It was first registered to a company director (so well specced for a 1989, vanity plate, auto locking diff, insulated glass, heated seats, electric windows, foldy downy arm and headrests etc) in Osterode in the former West Germany. It was then sold in December 1989 to a chap in Rathenow, which was formerly in East Germany. The car was owned by the same family, grandad, father and son, until I bought the car in December last year. Six new spark plugs later and I drove home from Potsdam to the UK, about 850km. The car has 242, 000 km on the odometer. Apart from a bit of oil loss from ye olde valve stem seals and ye olde sump, rocker cover and timing chain cover gaskets, the car has performed brilliantly. Since the new year I have done quite a bit of work to keep the car running well, pics to follow

I will try and post a few spots as well, plenty of DDR shite still put-putting about here in a cloud of 2stroke smoke!

The previous owners liked crisps and crusty rolls (and shitty aftermarket speakers judging by the frankly awful wiring)

In hindsight was probably a mistake to buy a car in the former DDR. The saying goes

"Mit Hammer und ein Stücke Draht,

Fährt man das Auto bis Leningrad"

With a hammer and a bit of wire you can drive all the way to Leningrad...

Ja, stimmt!

Danke fürs herzliche Willkommen.

Unfortunately the germans are also moving away from the idea of buy a car, own it out right, look after it, service it and enjoy it for many years. Every other radio and newspaper ad is for various leasing and long term rental offers, hence shiny new dacias everywhere and lots of awful new mercs and audis "from €199 a month for the rest of your life". Still a fair bit of (mostly giffer owned) stuff about as well. Used car prices on the whole about double those of the UK for most things. My car as I bought it, under a grand. Over here, almost £1500 at time of purchase. Plan is to spend my time here getting near enough everything sorted and hopefully import the car back to the UK and get myself an E or F plate!

The other alloy wheels are period RH alurad, ebay bargain. They made and still make alloys for mercedes amongst others. They will be for my summer tyres, going for this look but without the bodykit, painted bumpers and scheiß west german numberplate!

Wheels were nitromors-ed, washed, nitromors again, washed, sandblasted and now finally getting around to painting them!
