sierraman
What sort of chod do they use these days? I'd imagine the mk1 focus would be the logical successor of the cortina?
mrbenn
Dread to think. Imagine anything big and rear wheel drive would be high up on the list.

HillmanImp
Don't think there are any tracks round my way sadly as I used to enjoy going to Angmering when I lived darn sarf, so can't say.
oldford
Apparently Mondeos are very strong and they won't allow them in some races.

HillmanImp
Apparently Mondeos are very strong and they won't allow them in some races. I had this, I had a Cortina (VGV 195S) that we had bought to race in the Prod Stock which was 1.4 and under but they deemed it unsuitable for there and we were only allowed to race it in the bangers. Yeah fuck that. It had no floor and a poxy 1.3 engine. We would have been well bummed by all the 3 litre Granadas we were going to be 'racing' against. Sold it to some nutter who probably died. mouseflakes, burraston2006, Charlie Croker and 2 others
bub2006
Talking of modern bangers, how do they bypass fuel trip switch? Meant to go off in any collision and thought maybe the ecu would notice it had gone.
derskine
They fit carburettor engines do they not?I'm no expert nor do I take interest but I seem to recall this, so could be wrong!
Lankytim
Everything is rewired with just the bare minimum used to get the car running. Many are still converted to carburettor to do away with fuel injection altogether.
bub2006
That's another thing altogether come to think of it. When newish engines are fitted in classics can everything be omitted like all sensors, ecu etc, bang a carb on and it will run?
dave21478
You need to control the ignitions somehow. Modern engines havent had distributers for a long time, so even with a carb it still needs some electronics to run an ignition map to work the coil packs. Banger racers need it to last for an evening or maybe a few meets, so are not too worried about fuel efficiency or emissions, so I doubt they stress too much about stuff like that, but if you are putting a modern engine into a classic for road use you will need it to work properly. Stand-alone ECUs like Emerald would be up to the task or if you are a DIYer you could build a megajolt/megasquirt system.
eddyramrod
Based on the banger racers I've met since moving to Barrow... Mondeo, LS400, Micra, Volvo 740 seem to be the cars of choice, usually with Cologne V6 and manual box (at least in the Lexus and Volvo).

Guest bangerfan101
unlimeteds are thin on the ground these days , even the big meetins the numbers have dropped , big rwd volvo's , ford scorpio's , lexus's , toyota supras and even the toyota previa (for now) as for 2litre bangers the mondeo is the car to have , arlington raceway are hosting a 3litre front wheel drive meeting soon that will be pretty intresting . bang switches , airbags , all get ripped out and rewired to keep running in a smash . rookie bangers get a variety of shite raced but hondas are the car to have if your racing for the flag , twin carbs will go on most civics . the almera is one for the crashers in rookies /small cc meets . hard cars and will run all day

burraston2006
Up at Smeatharpe banger track there seems to be a team that always uses Civic CRXs. Usually painted black and green. They are always getting mashed up the chuff to the extent that the rear axle is pushed up to just behind the driver. The little rice burner just keeps on going and never seems to break! RedSparrow
This is all good as I find Modeos, big Volvos and Lexi (plural) completely unappealing - No offence intended to those of you who like them. And to any racers out there: Please feel free to destroy as many PT Cruisers as you like. I think that's one thing we can all agree on.All PT Cruiser meet please. Sudsprint and Junkman
beko1987
Last time I went to standlake there was a special Mondeo cup with their own race! Most of the rest was minis, or fiestas in the under 1l category
sierraman
I remember a guy telling me the old Nissan Sunnys were a bad bet due to the reinforcing crossmember behind the dash folding in easily thus even in a mild bang making Billy Bear Meat out of your legs. overrun
Asimo
Apart from wishing the banger scene would use BMW X 3/5/6, are 3 series & 5 series not used? RWD, lots of them, cheap at the end of their life. Charlie Croker
purplebargeken
Saw about 8 beavertails Transits heading along the A12 (late afternoon). Most of them seemed to have dented Mondeo's on board.
