Kiltox
Need to fit a new engine mount to my Kangoo van tonight which is my faithful* workhorse - hopefully regaining the use of 2nd gear in the process as I suspect the linkage is under strain due to the lower than usual height of the engine and box
DaveAspley
Nice day out and about today, firstly the 206 misfire job. Turned out to have faults with both number 3+4 injectors. Gave the customer the choice of OE at 67.90 each or 33.00 each if he waits for them to come from Doncaster tomorrow. Starter motor and repair the wiring connector on a 307 2.0, looks like they have come loose and the result high resistance made a bit of a mess. New starter on the shelf at Car User and car back on the road in half an hour. Had 3 job offer emails come in today, must still have my cv online somewhere from when I left a temping contract at LTI last year, "URGENT, TECHNICIANS REQUIRED EXCELLENT PAY!!" Heh, 18-20k basic over a 45 hour week, OTE (as in if you hit all sales targets) 35k+!!! Right-o , whatever you say lol. Banger Kenny
anonymous user
A serious question, possibly a stupid one but there you go. How would I go about finding a reliable mobile mechanic other than word of mouth. I'm pissed off with myself as I am just not up to crawling around on the floor underneath cars anymore. I need to get the petrol tank off the Bentley to get it repaired, but despite having started the job, I just can't do it. (I'm sure the neighbours have been amused by my cursing as my hip locks up). I could take it to a garage, but I don't know of one that will be happy to have a dead car there for about a week while the tank is done. I've done a quick google search, but nobody local turns up on it, other than a generic site that wants me to give all my details out. I was given a name and number for a chap by someone I know, but so far despite several messages left I have not had a phone-call returned. (That could be because he's really good and really busy, or he just doesn't want to work for me)
DaveAspley
Word of mouth is best, but the internet has a use too. Check a trade, or yell.com somewhere people can leave reviews so you can get a fair idea of what services a company offers. Also, Facebook. A lot of mobile guys on there (me included, as well as yell) as it's easy to spread word of a business and post photos of customers cars being worked on. Again , reviews are the guide. People aren't shy about complaining.
Kiltox
Kangoo engine isn't throwing itself around any more but 2nd is still absent. Bugger. Need to have a proper look at the linkage to see if anything's going on with it else I'll need to find a new parts slag and a good cheap van is a difficult thing to find! Doubt it's worth putting a replacement box in
twosmoke300
What have I had in for the last few day ? HmmFinishing the mot repairs on the ducato - including top strut bearings / fuck me those struts are heavy . Had to do inner and outer cv boots on one side too . Stupid gearbox has no level plug so oil had to be drained and correct amount put in via the breather . Stupid design that one ! Track rod end and refit cv boot on a goona 2 - almost a write off ! Alt belt Ren master Tps fit and calibrate on a triumph sprint .Clutch on a Nissan Quasimodo . Petrol with a bloody dmf !Vectra c discs and pads Transit rear caliper reset an retest Pretty boring but fairly typical of an independent garage I suppose . Had to take a c2 to Citroen to get a repaired bsi coded which hurts but I did take the guys in the workshop some biscuits - never hurts to grease the wheels . scaryoldcortina
How much stuff do you need to remove to get at the front timing belt on a KV6 Freelander? Lots. You also have to drain the engine oil, and the back belts need the inlet manifold removing too, which makes it the ideal time to service it and change the spark plugs. Should be back together tomorrow sometime. Banger Kenny, Barry Cade, UltraWomble and 4 others
Barry Cade
Entire day yesterday dropping the sump on the 9-5 and fitting the breather upgrade. Lucky as the pickup was well blocked and wouldn't have been long before I had oil starvation issues. So much for a Saab specialist history... Bought a air con refill kit and leak stop from Halfords and fired it in- last regas from Kwik Fit lasted a couple of weeks, ice cold again but for how long this time? Gave it a good valet today and new wiper blades and a bit of tidying.. Very nearly threw in the towel and bought a Grand Cherokee, but Saab is staying for now- I do really like it. 2 ABS rings to fit then it's MOT time. scaryoldcortina
Yeah, it's all easy enough, and there is plenty of access once you have made a huge pile of everything that was in the way. Owner says the dealer that supplied it serviced it and changed the plugs 5000 miles ago! I don't think the inlet manifold has been off in at least a decade, so I'll look tomorrow to see if there are 3 shiny new ones in the front bank and the factory plugs in the back one. billyboy406v6, Banger Kenny and andrew e

DaveAspley
Been doing a fair bit at MIRA recently, service and repairs on the site utility vehicles. Also had to go into major surgery on two of the taxis, '09 octavia at 301,000 has shot it's piston rings, lots of comedy gold pulling the lump out in the street and dumping it in the boot of my Rover to send it for rebuild. The other was a straightforward head gasket at 304,997 miles Banger Kenny, Kiltox, Barry Cade and 1 other
Dave_Q
Dear esteemed pro mechanics of autoshite, Sorry for the threadjack but I thought this would be a good way to get some advice. Briefly, the crank pulley fell off my Impreza last week. I've just managed to get the crank sprocket off to extract the remains of the key and inspect the crank and this is what I have: 2 problems, but the biggest is the damage to the keyway. The old crank pulley was worn smooth inside, and I suspect the crank damage has been done earlier in the cars life and just left, causing the key and pulley to get mangled and fall off. Now obviously, I know the proper solution is to either replace the crank or take it somewhere to weld/repair, but I'm trying to avoid the expense, and keep the engine in one piece where possible. Would any of you reuse this crank, by filling in the gap by the keyway with chemical metal or similar? If so can you recommend a good product to use? Thanks v.muchly. colnerov
Hi, Buy or make another woodruff key and fit it. If it's too loose then centre punch the side wall of the lower part of the key that goes in the slot in the crank. What this does is raise a ridge and makes it a tighter fit. Guest Hooli
Chemical metal worked for me on a mk3 escort, at least it lasted long enough to sell it as I saw it broke down a few weeks later. Banger Kenny and Dave_Q

Dave_Q
Thanks for the advice all, just to confirm I think the slot width is fine, its the chunk/V missing next to the front of the slot that I'm concerned about. The Reverend Bluejeans
Clamp the woodruff key in place, then a dab of MIG at the back and at the very front. It won't be going anywhere then. You may have to grind a clearance slot on the big crank bolt washer. Then use Wurth green thread lock on the crank where the sprocket fits. Bolt done up FT. The sprocket will no longer be an issue. Sod changing the crank. saucedoctor, Dave_Q and Banger Kenny
