Guest
Petrol Mondeos of that age seem to be utterly worthless at the moment, nice enough cars though. If I recall the big expense on them is if the clutch needs doing, so if it doesn't you should be alright hopefully! Good luck!
mk2_craig
There's a certain amount of love for old Mundanos on here, I have one myself which I really must get shot of imminently but it's been to all intents and purposes faultless and a decent car to drive too, even if the aircon's shagged like most of them (crap condenser design).Bonus if the bumpers are uncracked. Lower front arms will either be a MOT fail or a MOT advisory, they need replacing more often than the spark plugs do. Get your 300 quid's worth out of it then get most of it back by flogging the engine to someone with an old XR2.
binhoker668
Ok, am a bit thick......Front arms??It does have a crack in the back bumper, but I got the gaffa....Is a colour coded bumper Red one, notchback saloon, spoiler on boot jobby.Man..So would prefer a space cruiser/espace thang instead, but... y'know, it IS just a 2 sec walk down the road, and my friend is solid...Keep it comin. Have the fear. I mean, read my signature down there. You KNOW what I really want.......
Mr_Bo11ox
If you're absolutely bursting for a crap and theres someone in your bathroom who shows no sign of coming out soon, this car could be a good buy IMO.
Richard
Front arms are the wishbone style bottom arms that carry the bottom ball joint. The bushes at the other end don't last well but they are easy to change and about £25 to buy.
retrogeezer
Had my 2.0 ghia 97 Mondeo for 18 months now and very happy with it. Very quite, smooth and relaxing to drive. Did a 5hr 260 mile trip to Cornwall in with only a 'comfort' break and didn't feel like I had been sat in the car that long.Just spent 300 quid on it for the MOT - thats how much I like it. (new front wishbones and a new exhaust)
whitevanman
on my second one in 2 years, my mate has had a few as well, cheap and easy to fix, manifolds can crack, front arms as already stated and the usual small stuff goes wrong with them, but basically a sound buy at that price
binhoker668
Aw nice one folks - really needed some back up fer thisd one - I've always treated them with contempt and been quite vocal about it..However, F*** aesthetics, need transport! Can always trade in fer me Sigma WHEN it turns up... r.welfare
If the clutch is good, it's a good buy.If the clutch is buggered, or on it's way out - run away...
AnthonyG
BUY !Excellent cars, much better than all this French rubbish they go on about on here  .Make sure the clutch is good, though as it's basically a engine out job to replace. Should be OK on a genuine 80k one, a relative has a 190k diesel that is still going on the original. All other bits are cheap enough, although cam belt kits are more expensive than you might think at about £80. Has the belt been changed? - worth asking. As for buying a people carrier for less than a grand, you will struggle to get anything even moderately decent TBH.A 1999 V reg one I bought for £400 six months ago at an auction just needed a small suspension part (£12) to get through the MOT - As a reward its getting a service and new back discs ! reallyloud
There's something about a blue k registered base version saloon I quite like - same applies to early mk3 pov spec cavalier saloons - quite tidy looking motors.

Cavcraft
You could actually. I'll drive pretty much anything if I have to and for quite a while too. Until I bought a Mk2 Mongdeo and I'm sorry (well, I'm not actually) but they're horrible cars. I kid you not everytime I drove it it made suicide look fun and interesting: the interior is a sea of truly horrible, cheap sharp plastic, they're not at all nice to drive and if you run over a postage stamp the bumpers will break. How the f*ck the Mk2 Mondeo was a hundred times worse than it's far better predecessor is a mystery to me.Cheap, nasty, shite, dull, totally uninspiring, worthless, badly cobbled together shite. Rarely have I despised a car as much as the Mongdeo Mk2. Horrible, horrible shite. In fact I'd rather get the bus with a load of methadone starved smackheads with head colds, fat birds with tramp stamp tattoos and grey leggings 200 sizes to small and screaming whining kids called Britney and Keiron. retrogeezer
Cav....you must have driven a shite one as what you describe is so far away from what mine is like....I've had a fair few cars over the years and mine is one of the nicest cars I have driven. The interior is a nice place to be too....but mine is a Ghia with plenty of plush bits and toys. I hate the plastic wood fascia thing though. It certainly drives better than the Vectra I had before it and the car I've had most trouble with ever.... a one owner 60,000 mile Calibra. And I'm absolutely not saying this as I have one....if it was crap to drive I would say so, and I certainly wouldn't have spent £300 getting it through the MOT either. I had planned on keeping the first one but soon relaised I detested it and all were bought to flog on or taken in part-ex. I'm not anti-Ford, had many pleasant years in all manner of Cortinas, Capris, Escorts, Granadas etc and I do like the Mk1 Mondeo but the Mk2 will always be a horrible car to me sorry.I deliberately didn't mention Vectras by the way in case people thought I was doing my normal 'Vauxhall only' routine ( ) but truly there are any number of other cars I'd have before a Mondeo Mk2 mucker. pogweasel
I had an early Mk2 Estate from work for a bit. Not a bad motor all told, but the seats were wierdly short & narrow as I recall.
binhoker668
Well, fair play to Cavette, but sure, feck it! I'll give it a spin anyway. If, that is, I can still afford it when I get me wages!Hey Cavette, are you an Ulsterman? Just the 'mucker' bit made me think so...
retrogeezer
I was so gutted about our Calibra, it was my girlfriends uncles from new, so one owner and 60,000 on the clock when we bought it at 4 years old for £6,500. (a 94 L reg)At one stage it seemed like I was having a new sensor fitted every other week. One sensor packed up within a month of being replaced (at £150 a time)! We had problems with the brakes, the front wishbones - it even had a fuel pipe leak. I wouldn't mind but we hardly used the thing and I sold it in 2003 for £2000 with 84,000 on the clock. What with the depriciation and the money spent on it, by far the most expensive car I have owned. The Vectra however was bought as an insurance write-off for £350, repaired for £100 and then gave me 3 years of trouble free motoring and then got sold for £650! Cavcraft
You guys DO realise that I only want it for the pen clip by the gearstick don't you? Guys? Oh.....Shit. I'm a Cheshire lad sir, 'mucker' is just an expression that a few mates and I use, started as a piss take of a knobhead we worked with.Retro: I could understand that on a newer Vauxhall as the sensors on Vectras especially could be troublesome but obviously you had a bad experience with your Calibra. I did too with mine but only because some silly bint in a people carrier decided to come straight out of a junction and hit my n/s/r quarter, writing the car off. I was bloody gutted, loved that car despite 2 doors equalling pita with the kids. Funny thing was though despite the sleeker shape it wasn't anywhere near as fast as the GSi Cavalier I had even though both had red top engines. Had quite a few Vectras nearly all of which had 170,000+ miles on and never gave me any major bother at all. I can fully understand why people don't like them but compared to other cars in their class I would rate them very highly indeed.Sorry for going o/t there binhoker (and all) and to be fair for that sort of money you can't really go wrong assuming clutch and head gasket are ok. CortinaDave
Mk1 mondeos are VASTLY superior, solid, better interiors, better bumpers, nicer driveMk2 feels like pound shop version of the mk1.. bumpers laughably easy to break.. in fact i never see them now with whole bumpers, front arms are made of chocolate. corners cut everywhere.I do like the styling of that era but there was so much cheap crap put into them it ruined what could have been a decent update of a great car.My old man's 80K R plate Si got weighed in earlier this year after going wrong on a daily basis. having said that for 300 sheets all of that is irrelevant, a decent spec one is a comfortable fast beast and well worth having at that sort of readies.i had a W plate vectra SRI... Liked it, seemed a more solid car than the mk2 mondeo, if a bit uncomfortable.. but it blew a head gasket which cost 400 quid to put right, then THE NEXT DAY the air con unit went on fire and the car vanished in a sea of flames, so im not sure id have another of those either
r.welfare
There's good and bad examples of every car aren't there. I had a peach of a Volvo 340, which is universally considered one of the worst cars ever sold. On the other hand, our newish Fabia was marred by loads of niggling little faults. So, check the motor out, and if it looks/feels/smells/tastes good for 300 sheets, go for it. Goes for whether it's a Mondeo or Daewoo Nubira...
