Sierra "S"

I posted these for a poster on another forum, so cut and pasted have this totally unrelated brochure scans of the rather unusal Sierra "S" and rarer "GLS". What do you mean Feck off

Here you are 2.0 S (and GLS!!!) picces. The S came out mid year 1985, the GLS early 1986, both were replaced in the facelift of late 1986, the GLS surving with the plastic rockered DOHC 8 valve and standard fit ABS and rear discs....

My dad had a brand new A reg Sierra 2 litre Ghia as his company car - that was some luxury car in its day. he had a 2.0iS in about 87. IIRC in between the two he had an MG Montego EFI but that fell apart way before it was due to be traded - partly due to my brother driving it sideways around just about every corner he came to.

When they were fairly new, my uncle had a sporty Sierra and on reflection it was probably the "S". He had it on tick and evidently couldn't afford it, as it disappeared some months later and was replaced with a shonky MK3 Escort with a matt black front wing. Said Escort was later stolen, then recovered a few weeks later, with the front wing resprayed and a fancy set of rear shelf speakers added. It was then pushed back into use. Nice work!

I'd sack that gardener - judging by the shadow cast by the house at least an hour has passed and he's still mowing the same bit of lawn.

Looks like he's even had the cheek to 'borrow' the Seirra for a quick blast round the lanes enjoying its 'sparkling performance', then parked it back all skew-whiff and hoped I wouldn't notice.

No wonder he's hardly got any work done.

Just can't get the staff these days.

I remember the "S" well - I couldn't quite get my dad to chop his 1.8GL in for one. Mind you, he did redeem himself with a 1.8GLi Mk2 Cav in '88, which was a bit of a rocket, then chopped that for a Mk3 1.8 auto which was like a milkfloat.Later on he had a DOHC 2.0 carb LX, which a young RW remembers for being GR8 4 SMOKIN TIRES IN REVERSE.

Nice one :D Forgot how nice these models of Sierra were, I (wrongly) painted the rear panel of my Corgi Sierra Ghia black to look like that!I have a 1982 Sierra brochure - its uber-early and although there are no nice sporting models, it has a full 2 page spread on what I consider to be the Holy Grail of Sierras.Nope not the 'Cozza', but the 'Popularesque' grey-grille job with ONE dangly mirror and more blanking plates than you could shake a Ford P21 push-button radio at 8)

I'm glad this has been brought up, because I'd like to know for sure if we ever got the grey slatty grille version - I've never seen one, ever.Outside of the brochure, has anyone else?

ULTRA GRIM.Wow. Never knew Ford built such an unappealing car. Makes the base-spec Cargo truck look positively luxurious. I can only assume that anybody unlucky enough to be in possession of such a machine would have colour coded that grille panel STAT, before nabbing themselves a set of those nice aero wheeltrims the mid-range models got.

I know I've never seen one.Turning the next page to the 'L' trim version is like night and day, the number of refinements added (and decent seats) must have surely meant that no-one opted for the base. Come to think of it I dont remember seeing many base-spec medium/large cars of this era, plenty of Fiesta Populars though. The 1100 Escort MK3 popular in my 1982 car brochure is even more severe than this Sierra, with full vynl trim and lots of bare metal showing. In Diamond white without the frills it really looks quite 'pure'.I can however see why Ladas etc were popular for the same money though.

We did get them, but not for long. I think they only made them for about 18 months and even then the first thing everyone did was fit the larger lights and grille.

Merseyside Police had grey grilled, upside down mirror Sierras back in '82.

I know a chap who had probably the ultimate in dodgy old Sierras - a 1.3L complete with grey grille.

Just googled for a pic of one of the plod ones, and the first pic to come up was this...

Truly f**kin' annoying when I owned (the real) XEM 649W, an ex-Merseyplod RS2000 in about '93. (It was a £600 shed back then...)

Yep at the end of our road a guy bought a new beige base estate, and kept it like that for years, there was a 2.3 GLS Cortina estate a few doors along too. A base facelift (1986) came out too minus trims before I think it got called the classic?

Really? That would make it an X-reg then, I didn't think they were launched until Y...?

the last cortina ran off the lines in July 82 so the first sierras were probably not built until a few weeks later. they would have needed time to change all the cortina tooling for sierra stuff surely?Mk1 S spec sierra's are pretty damn rare too. I only ever remember seeing one, and that was a decade ago when i was three cars up climbing on it in Noble's scrapyard trying to liberate its boot spoiler for my 1.6 L

I definitely remember one (iS, that is), a colleague had it around 1992-93. It was red, and already getting tatty. He chopped it in for a nice XR4x4 which I think he later crashed :roll:I remember a red base estate with the grey grille in my village, run by the owner of the local bus company (a fairly joyless chap). Had it for a long while as I recall.

Fantastic news - a grey-grille Sierra base has to be added to the holy grail of shite, surely? Thoroughly unappealing.

I was too scared to say that - but I couldnt agree more :D

Good to see quite a few peeps remember seeing them on the road, I wonder if any have crept into anybody's family photos of the time or something? I wouldnt imagine anyone actually wanting to photograph one back then

The povo spec I remember was OTH 803Y, belonged to a mate's dad. Turns out it was a 1600, but I'm certain it had the grey grille.According to the DVLA, who may not be faultless with their info.

Brochure says yes to 1600 being an option on the grey-grillers :DPLUS....... a 2.3 diesel 5-speeder

Sierra's are excellent old cars. The 2.0's go very well, Pinto and the dohc's, however the 1.6 is still a good laugh on wet roundabouts as is the 1.8! The 4x4's are said to be very good traction wise. I havent seen a 2.0S for a looong time, or a mk1 for that matter.Ive always facied a mk2 2.9 4x4 Ghia Estate myself, in white.

Well my current white 1.8L Sapphire has windy windows, sunroof and central locking. Central London Registration also, makes me think it's an ex Hire car. Anybody got any info on Godfrey Davis etc around late 89 early 90, as regards ordering and registration lists?? Built November 89, registered Valentines day 1990, with orange indicators and coloured rear lights (not the facelifted clear/black variants) All over white, grey bumpers, Blue tweed trim, black rear louvres/vents on the C pillar. CVH in place, all works really well, 32 mpg average, cost me 70 quid with £40 of unleaded in the tank! New fuel tank and radiator, never had alloys, no spoilers, totally unBarried, but needs doors, and I have replaced the bonnet with a hatchback (longbeak) bonnet, as it's all I could get!Reg G 56 ALK , if anyone has any info, let me know eh!
