Skizzer's SD1: Tomorrow's Car, Yesterday. Fixerations, with mixed results

I've just won this, against stiff bidding and huge demand from, er, nobody else:

$_12.JPG

It was on the eBay tat thread last week - it's a 1979 series 1 3500 with 46k on the clock, fresh ticket and tax, a goodly amount of history and a very tidy interior that's a delightful shade of baby poo brown. Seller sounds like a very nice bloke on the phone.

Picking it up on Sunday. Hilarious* collection saga and more pics to follow.

Now, where am I going to put it?

I was perving all over that as it looks fantastic. Someone mentioned (was it you?) that it might have a bit of wob in it. Lets hope not as it looks bloody brilliant.

Ha! ..... start collecting now

Ha!  Funnily enough he does also have two front wings and a full set of doors that he's offered me a deal on...  I haven't seen it yet but not expecting too many horrors.  The door bottoms are all on their way, and one in particular appears to have had intimate relations with some Kurust and a rattle can.  I'm hoping it won't need anything major for another 12-18 months, as I've got a load of bodywork to pay for on the Jag this winter.

It's not an S but it does have the same alloys - didn't the S have the same engine, but with a load of options and some special (extra-shite) colours?

That Rover is gorgeous.

Early car, right engine, no silly chin spoiler, and correct period alloys.

Thanks - yep, ticked all the boxes for me (although I like the Mk2s as well, which have one of the most luxurious interiors of evah)

I don't think this one's an original colour is it?

Must say I don't remember seeing an S1 this colour either.  I'll look into it.  Obviously nobody's going to be surprised that it's had paint, all the Mk1s must have by now; it looks ok in the pictures, but we'll see up close on Sunday.

Somewhere I've got an old car mag with a news item about how they all stood in a field full of puddles for 18 months because they weren't selling, and got delivered with the bonnets and doors already rusting.

No the sd1 is still massive. I have one and it's still longer than pretty much everything

I did quite a lot of hitch hiking in the mid-1980s so have been a passenger in most cars that were around at the time- the very first car that stopped for me was a Peugeot 604. The SD1 always struck me as the roomiest by far, much roomier than a Mk2 Granada.

I don't really remember that colour either - but looking around on AROnline, this one from the launch brochure seems to be platinum:

I might have to try and do a homage to that photo on the way home tomorrow - it'll be a reservoir in the Valleys though, rather than Loch Whatever.  I even have a Cokin tobacco graduated filter somewhere for the moody orange sky.

Size-wise, I'm struggling slightly to find a lock-up big enough for it - it's about 15'6" and so is the biggest available garage.  Might have to take the back bumper off  ;-)
