Yeah i've seen it. Advert isn't entirely accurate, plus i the guy selling now isn't the same one i sold to.

This guy in Bury has several ebay accounts and specialises in 'barn finds' he gets via banger racers and co-part, i don't know him (but have mutual aquaintances) personally so can't comment on him.

His stuff tends to get relisted a lot though

  • 4 weeks later...

Vectra decided to stop boosting last week. Bizarre the way it happened, nothing dramatic just the turbo kind of turned it's self off. As i was less than a mile from home i thought fuck it, i'll deal with it tomorrow thinking it was something simple

The drive to work the next day was interesting, crawling up Parbold hill (1 in 6 grade) in second, foot to the floor was shit. Not as shit as foot to the floor in fourth on the m6 doing barely 50mph though.

I've had intermitant power loss on this before which was cured by replacing a snotty fuel filter, but this was total and constant.

Checked the filter (it was fine), checked the egr, throttle body end was very shitty but not totally choked, hefty cleaning of this and the boost sensor at the back of the inlet manifold yielded no change. What was worrying was the thick carpet of tar like clag that lined the plenum and intake pipes.

One last roll of the dice was changing the air flow meter post airbox for a known good one.....no change also meant no more cheap fixes.

The hope of sticky turbo vanes being freed off with hefty right foot resulted with a still inactive turbo but an AK-47 sounding death rattle around cylinder 1-2 above 3000 rpm.

My mate who is more savvy with modern diesels gave it a cursory glance and pronounced "turbos' goosed, weigh the fucker in!"

I didn't take many pictures as i was on a roll, but highlight include pouring a pint of treacle out of tbe intercooler and then having to use a gallon of petrol to swill that and all the air ducting clean. A horrible shitty job and a reminder of why i've never really bothered with diesels.

Anyway the result was this, i put my finger in the turbo whilst still attached to the car and found it to be turning freely.....but hang on is it not meant to have nut on the end?post-5712-0-18176600-1492335022_thumb.jpg

This is when i took the bugger off, my arse started to go i had visions off having to take head of to find piston mashed to death an errant fastener, it wasn't in any of the ducting or intercooler, so the search began.

I don't no how good the image is but the shaft has snapped on the turbo and the exhast side has buried it self in the housing.

What caused this i don't know, it's always had a loud whistly turbo. Even now, the new turbo is the same.

I'm hoping the nut came off jammed the turbo and caused the failure.

So i spent good friday stripping the turbo of a breaker (dmf fail killed it). I took the lot, turbo, manifold, cat + lambda sensor. Bolted it all up loosely and googled torque settings, found conflicting figures so did it the autoshite way and torqued everything up to fucking tight.

Then before fitting everthing up i unplugged the injectors, cracked off the oil feed pipe to the turbo and span it over to check it had flow going to it, as i'd be royally pissed off if a blocked/split oil line killed the new turbo as well.

Ta-da!

Fitted it all up, refilled and bled the coolant, and decided i'd best change the oil. I'll hold my hands up, in the 8 months and 15,000 miles i've had this i've never changed the oil despite spending a fortune on other things.

I'd ignored the golden rule of shite car ownership 'oil is cheaper than bearings' and it'd bitten me on the arse.

Then i remembered why i'd not done it, these 1.9 cdti's are notorious for seizing their sump plugs, and mine had been rounded off by a previous spanner monkey.

Easy enough, welded on a 17mm bolt and crack it off with a breaker bar.......er, no. The only thing that cracked was the bolt.

Fuck it cranked up the power on the mighty mig and used a wheel bolt and scaff bar with the thought at the front of my mind that i'd peel the ally sump off.

Success!

The result? So far, so good. Much boostings, many smooth.

Still sounds like an escort rs turbo with a fucked cam, but it seems like nothing is leaking.

It's a little tappy still around cylinder 1-2, but nowhere near as bad as before. I'm hoping it's just wear and tear and won't get any worse.

I'm going to drop the oil again in 500 miles, not looking forward to that if i'm honest as the oil filter is an absolute arse to do.

Just need to change to springs, rear upper arms and a wheel bearing.......

Orl voxorlz.....

On the plus side, happy window regulator is happy.
