Right, instead of having 3-4 threads for different cars i'm going to do a Boll and lump everything together in one.

So to start as i'm sure your all aware i've recently took pity on/had a mental breakdown and taken on a Datsun Laurel, my first car from the land of the rising sun.

Quick recap, Datsun came into my life as it was on it's way to the oval/crusher/middle-earth, i stepped in like a valiant knight and now have yet another lump of useless shit on my hands.

Duerdens is a localish dealer to me, infact i used to work just down the road and would go into 'The Mount' on a friday for an after work pint.

I've always known Duerdens to be a vauxhall dealer though, never new they did nissan, the only nissan dealer i knew of in southport was Reynolds and they shut down 10 years ago.... maybe some sandgrounders on herecan shed some more light on this (i'm looking at you Eddy :-D )

I have to ask how did that damage happen? It looks like someone has driven past with a crowbar welded to their car about 3ft up. How did they miss the light etc?

 

Interior is ace BTW. 

No idea, i'd like to think a pit manouvre was performed on it after an old boy went nuts it the local legion and was then was chased down by Blackburn 5-0 in their hyundai i30's.

But i think it was actually clipped by a bin wagon.

Looks like the isopon monster spread the love with mi' Datto after he did my blue Cortina, the bastard. It actually looks worse in real life, like it was put in with a catapult and rubbed down with a brick, i'm still going to leave it though.

On a side note, it also has 5 nearly new Vredstein T-tracs, so every cloud and all that bollocks.

Interesting repair that, but it looks like you struck lucky with the bootlid untouched, light lense repairable; limiting it to time spent rather than mopeny spent. I suspect a scaffold pole, rope and sturdy tree will see a large percentage of that pull out.

 

If you want to sell the car care kit -I'm your man. Fit nicely in one of mine.......

History Monster awakes...

In the 60s and 70s, you wouldn't be a BL dealer.  You'd be Austin, or Morris, or Triumph.  The dealership at the traffic lights on Roe Lane was Hattons (Austin) and the dealership on Eastbank Street, which was a carpet shop last time I looked, was J. D. Duerden: Morris.  They changed to Datsun quite suddenly in about 1973-4; I remember this very clearly because I cycled past one afternoon and was so mesmerised by the new frontage that I rode straight up the back of a van parked on the bus stop!  Toyota Hi-Ace, Walker's Refrigeration, white over dark blue. ;)

Duerdens later took on Hattons site after Hattons closed down.  IIRC while they were the Datsun dealership they were still running their old Minor parts van, a relic of their Morris days but wearing Datsun signage.

 

Oh and I'm another one with a "thing" for shorter-than-usual number plates. :)   My dad had DWM 95C from new, also 802 KF, RTB 52Y and D85 OVS; I've had VMB 52E, SWF 87H, PLV 28T and HFV 66W followed by a selection in Cyprus that culminated in the shortest plate I'm ever likely to own: GF 8.

When your Laurel was registered, I was driving my first Lada, SVR 535R.

The fact that you have a Datsun badge on the car makes it a proper bit of shite. Sir I salute you.

The interior is hideous fantastic and I'm loving the wheels, 4 spokes deserve a comeback.

 

 

For the bodywork repair I would suggest a big hammer and some duct tape as the initial repair kit.

With that much rust on the rest of it, then it may not live long enough to be worth doing much else.

Naaah. Just hammer a smaller fender over it. Should be fine. Mr. Binny's coostomised it well, 'e did...

IIRC, '84 was the year they changed the name to Nissan, but to avoid confusion etc...2nd biggest mistake they ever made.

Biggest mistake? imho Making those '86-89 Maximas that could, (and often did) run for 250K even if you did happen to change the oil once or twice. They must have learned from that one, too...

Great save! I had an '83 Sentra once and it was a piece of shit. I've only seen a few of them since...

Thought i'd give the ebay cortina a run to work today and give it a service.......brakes failed coming off the m65....... I was lucky and just tapped the back of a tipper who didn't seem to notice and fucked off.

So far i've gone through three pints of brake fluid trying the purge the system of the brown watery shite that was masquerading as dot4.

It must have a leak/ blown cylinder somewhere as i've still only got half a pedal....and i've got drive home in it....30 miles....in the dark......and rain with one light pointing at chester and one at leicester.

Todays plan was a full service of the cortina. Unfortunately it tried to kill me, so i took some time out to eat some pies and have a little sleep.

I then realised i had the wrong oil filter, so i gave it an ignition service (don't know if that's a thing, but it is now).

I got one of those accuspark conversion kits for £85 which consists of a refurbed dizzy, a set of plugs, a set of leads, and a coil.

I have to say results so far are mixed, mainly beause the pies were repeating on me, which is my excuse for setting the timing 180 degrees out :angry008: and because i was concerned about imminent death either way what's on the now is beter than what was on before.

Before pictures havn't uploaded from my phone, but basically it was the original fucked coil with an equally fucked coil (albeit half the size bizarrely) cable tied to it. But here's a picci with everything ripped out.

Easy start, the only tool a mechanic needs.....unless your time is out 180. But other wise this stuff cures all, i don't why they don't use it in hospitals.

A previously mentioned i had a minor coming together with a tipper, if i was in any other car i would be dead or at the very least a quadruple amputee.

Luckily the the Ford Cortina is essentially a re-badged T-34 tank, so i only suffered a bent plate, slightly downturned bumper and a broken headlamp. Handily for me i keep another cortina at work that was gently bummed for a lamp.

The interior in the laurel is grim to say the least. My makes my father's old Hyundai stellar's interior look like a cure for seasonal affected disorder.

 

One of my friends drove his MK3 tina for a good while with no brakes - he was quite happy just using the handbrake, unfortunately a member of the public allowed his vehicle to help my friend bring his 'tina to a halt - the result was his 'tina was off the road for a while.
