r.welfare
I think you can still bowl up to your Seat and VW dealer and buy a new Alhambra/Sharan, a model that was first launched in 1995 and not replaced when Ford went their own way with the Galaxy/S Max...rumour has it that they will be replaced next year by an extended Touran.Berlingo/Partner is a good call but I guess their days are numbered now there are new models out. I assume the new "baby" vans (Nemo/Bipper) will replace the commercial variants.Citroen and Peugeot have long had a policy of not directly replacing anything at the lower ends of their ranges; I'm sure I saw a 58-plate 206 the other day, which is a 10 year old design itself!Suzuki didn't replace the Vitara themselves until a couple of years ago, I think. Where have all the "Fat Boy" versions gone which were all the rage in the mid-90s. I would have thought the Mitsubishi Shogun is getting a bit long in the tooth these days as well, isn't the current model just a restyle of the 1991 2nd gen?Up until the ally-bodied model came out 5 years ago, Jaguar had a good run out of the XJ40... Milford Cubicle
I think the Land Rover Defender thing is a bit contentious, don't they share only one part with the Series 1, the axle plug or something? It's still a bit of a stalwart though, first ones being built in '83Haven't those Partner/Berlingo things been replaced now? Ratdat
The 124 was made in India until recently, badged as a 'Premier' I think. It had a Datsun 1200 engine I believe. I know you can still buy the old Y31 (late 80's) Nissan Cedric in Japan and UAE and the latter still has the old shape (again 1980's) Nissan Patrol available too. How about this awesomely shite concoction sold in Iran, the Pars Khodro PK. The perfect marriage of early Renault 5 body and Kia Pride floorpan. Awesome. HillmanImp
I think the Land Rover Defender thing is a bit contentious, don't they share only one part with the Series 1, the axle plug or something? This is often something i think about. They say that the Corolla is the best selling model in the world, with over 30 million sold, but it is several different cars with the Corolla name. Problem is when do you say a car is a brand new model and not a development of the original? As you say, there is so little in common with the original Land Rover compared to the modern one, however off the top of my head i would have classed it as being the same vehicle. There was a lad i was mates with in my teens who was into Land Rovers and from memory there were a lot of changes made when the Series 3 was phased out for the Defender. However could you still class the Defender of being one of several stages of development of the original car? How much of the preceding vehicle was carried across? I mean if they have gradually just made the car different over some years i would class it as being the same however if they have introduced what is pretty much a new model, i would say it was a new car with the originals name (as per the Corolla).I guess the Land Rover has the advantage of looking similar to its predecessors which will make fools like me think that it is the same car which confuses the issue even more. I bet there are several cars that have changed in name and appearance but are essentially the same car (how much of the Pug 309 was actually Horizon). In fact i wish i had not even thought about this now. I was going to ask what the bast selling production car was based upon it being the same vehicle but there are so many ifs and buts i am just going to go with the Toyota Corolla. Albert Ross
With Land Rover, the part that has stayed all the way is a spot welded tab that secures ropes on the rear body sides. The part number also remains. The wheel stud pattern is identical, and new wheels will fit, but the older wheels may not fit, as the bolt holes may be a little tight. It's been an evolution. The Santana was building Land Rovers under licence at the Santa Ana factory since 1959, but the DNA split after the mid 70s, and now the designs are their own. They make a 3.3 litre 6 cylinder diesel, based on the 2286 4 cylinder we have in the UK. The gearboxes are stronger, and these engines etc are interchangeable. The New Iveco Massif is the latest of a line that has the identity that should have been. Realistically it would be called the series 4, as it has leaf springs, but a larger capacity engine and stronger drivetrain. Small but boring history lesson there! Jason A
RE the Peugeot Partner those vans were the biggest load of tosh I ever had the misfortune to drive back when I was working for the Royal Mail. How I pined for my humble ´S´plate Escort 55 van when they gave me one of them as my daily drive. The thing was constantly being sent to the garage, one thing after another it was. Post Office mechanics said they were perhaps one of the most problematic vehicles they´d ever known and it was a blessed relief when the Pug in turn was replaced by the Vauxhall Combi. Unfortunately. French manufacturers have historically overlapped their old ranges with "replacements" but that's probably got something to do with a gradual increase in competitors' sizes. Peugeot kept a slimmed down 205 range on the go for a number of years after the full 106 became available, while the 106 itself lingered until well after the (bigger) 206 came out but quite some time before the (heapashit) 107 first appeared. Hedging their bets perhaps - probably a sensible policy in terms of sales volumes. Similar parallels with R5 and "Clio Campus".
Spottedlaurel
Do Renault still churn out the last-model Clio as a Campus? Think I saw one t'other day, has the rear plate in the bumper rather than the tailgate (updated for the sake of it, looked no better). I'll what see what a quick Google says... Spottedlaurel
Flippin' heck! I was right, but they want over £8k on the road for even the basic version. Mysteriously, they list Twingo starting at almost the same price, so why bother with the Campus? 'Proper' Clio starts at well over £9-grand - frightening! My sub-£300 Bluey's doing just as good a job. No wonder new car sales are on the slide, now I see why Vauxhall are killing off all their perfectly decent trade-ins Back on topic, Nissan did the B120 Sunny pickup for years after the saloons died - Ratdat will correct me on the exact date I hope, but they did the 'Bakkie' in South Africa until very recently. Ooh, just checked - looks like they still do them!
mk2_craig
Margins on Clio Campus are probably enormous despite the low sales volumes now, the development and tooling costs will have been absorbed years ago now. Maybe they're being kept going primarily for some obscure country where they have a much higher market share.
