White dog turds - now you're talking nostalgia!

I'm going to nominate this.

Somehow my dad overcame his John Shuttleworth-style spending skills at Christmas '79 and I got one of these. Total quality. It was in regular use until about 10 years back (bit old for it then!) when, still boxed, I got £100 for it from a collector.

In a couple of years I'm going to get some old Scalextric cars and build a replica of "Brands Hatch" in the loft (still got the track, transformer, controllers and Track Plans book) and turn my daughter into a tomboy.

I got one of these for christmas when I was about 9. At the time it was an awesome thing to own and I was overjoyed to get it but on reflection was probably rather rubbish with it's limited forward & reverse/turn action. When I saw one again last year I just had to buy it 8)

The other toy aside from Matchbox cars and models kits that was largely responsible for my love of motors and also for teaching me a lot of mechanical stuff at a young age was Technic Lego. I still love the stuff...

I had everything there apart from the black test car on the top right and the truck on bottom right. I think I stopped playing with the stuff when those came out. However, I went and got all my technic lego from my parents loft a few months back and really pissed the wife off by covering the living room floor with the stuff and re-building all the kits again. I now have the red test car and the JCB sat, built in the spare bedroom! I so hope when we have a kid it's a boy so it gives me a good excuse to buy all this type stuff again. Hey, even if we have a girl I'll buy it all anyway! LOL

Get the truck if you can, it's one of the best they did and quite complex to make. It has a compressor powered by a motor to work the pnumatics. I think it's the only Technic model that had that.I'd say Technic was definately responible for teaching me how a differential worked as well as understanding gear ratios. GR8 4 turning your kids into grease monkeys.

I got a set for Christmas, and added to it with second hand track, you can still buy it (restored) for reasonable money of ebay..

Was a great idea, the fact that you could overtake and fit jumps etc, however there was not as much speed related skill required as scalextic as you have barriers to keep you on the track.

Think I certainly have plenty of track somewhere at the fossils house.

This was one of my favourites:

Yeeharrrr!!

I used to love launching any old cars (e.g. Matchbox King Size) up the ramp at great speed 8)

And there's a double stunt set I had but I can't for the life of me find a picture of it. I think it was Matchbox, came with two cars, and it had two red rubber-band-powered car launchers similar to the one on the right below

They attached to sections of white plastic track with red stripes on it, which you could assemble together with two loop-the-loop sections so that each car when fired would shoot off down its track, go round the loop and then cross - or hit - the other at an intersection. If they didn't hit, the winner was the one who reached their finish line. Ring a bell with anyone?

Cheers,

Mark.

Yeah, Matchbox Streak Racing! I still have a huge box of that stuff in the loft. I've got a set with glow in the dark track that came with a Mk4 Cortina and a Datsun 260Z, both with glow in the dark windows. I also have this set...

And this one but not got the box...

Got a lot of the older stuff too that had blue and yellow track.

Yeah Streak Racing, that's it! Still can't find a pic of my particular set, but I seem to remember it came with a white Superfast Mk2 Ford Escort RS2000 with Shell badging... can't remember the other car. We used all kinds of cars on that set anyway, Matchbox and Corgi. Those car launchers were lethal though... until the rubber band broke  Mark.

I have to say my matchbox 'race n chase' slot car set was pretty much a firm favourite of mine too. I was lucky enough to get some extra cars and track for it, which included a Fiat 131, TR7 and VW Scirocco - all shite of the finest variety. Lego was my first toy and played (and still does!) a huge part in my childhood - some of the recent technics sets have been the best I've seen. I also had the Matchbox S-400 Streak racing set, I can't remember the specific cars (the vice finished them off years ago) but I recall the cars with no suspension being particularly best suited for the downhill track. The start launcher had to be attached via a large clamp screw to a chair in order for the cars to build up momentum down the track. Eventually when I got bored the plastic flexible track became useful for slapping unsuspecting sisters.Another favourite of mine were those orange Tonka trucks, the fact that they still exist, although covered in rust, marker pens and mucus testifies how tough they were.I got my first radio control car when I was 8, it was a particularly slow 'Nikko' 1/24 scale Porsche 935 in black. I'm fairly sure it would have been reasonably expensive and the batteries would have cost a small fortune - for essentially 20 or so minutes of inaccurate driving along my 'roadmaker' roads.

I picked up a Powertrack 4 Lane set about 15 years ago & managed to pick up some new-old stock cars for a fiver each from a toyfair.I had the cars mentioned by Datsuncherry, plus a Saab Turbo & a MK2 Escort.Stuck the cars on eBay a couple of years back & got about 20 quid each for most of them, but just like real old Fords, the Escort went for 50 :o
