Never mind the estates, there are still a comparative number around seeing as you could get them up tp a G plate. You can still see vans as well. It's the saloons that have really disappeared! :(

I love the 1978 - 1982 Peugeot 305, now they really have disappeared!. Not alot of difference just subtle changes to the front & rear, such as the positioning of the rear number plate on the estate.

It's interesting that the only lasting symbol of the Peugeot 504 is the pickup made until the early 90's. The only lasting symbol of the Citroen Visa is the C15 van which only ceased production within the last few years.

Although the same can't be said about the Ford Cortina P100 or the Ford Sierra P100 pickups. Both seemed to cease production in line with the car & have disappeared accordingly.

There seem to be quite a few survivors in this area....Saw a TOTALLY IMMACULATE Cortina-based P100 being used to transport Santa's sleigh the other day (maybe taking it somewhere for some final fettling in preparation for the big day  )....Can't think why I didn't get a pic....

Likewise there was a now-rarely-seen Honda Acty which did/does similar duty here in Long Stratton.

I went to look at a 305 estate many years ago, can’t 100% recall if pre-facelift or not as it would have been on the cusp of changing over. Reckon it was. Anyway, I got put off when looking under the bonnet and seeing that bizarre round-the-houses fan belt arrangement. Oh, that and the rusty windscreen pillar helpfully pointed out by the vendor’s young daughter……

Do see the odd 305 van, usually the same one, but certainly rare round here now.

A long time ago (20 years?) my stepdad bought a £70 204 estate to use as a builder’s hack. Regrettably I don’t have photo of that one. This was in a series of delightful old relics one step away from the scrapyard which included Minor van and pickup, MkI 1100, HA van, Escort MkI van and Chevanne. Slightly better ones included a dropside CF, a couple of Honda Actys and several Mazda B1600s (better than B1800 he reckons). Later on came a B2200 (still around with his son-in-law) and now a Ford Ranger which is very good but not at all shite. Sorry, random bit of reminiscing there.

The Yugo hasn’t moved since that night-time shot (are we surprised?) so managed to get a better photo yesterday, to be added to the next update.

No Marina / Ital vans amongst that little lot of shite commercials/car based vans?!What does the Honda Acty look like? (I'd probably know one if I saw one!)

Also on his driveway was this, which belongs to his lodgers. Like it KingMaz? Odd spec of 2-litre auto saloon but with bodykit and white alloys. Just about to be put through another MoT, but I've asked for an option on it should it ever need a new home :P Also on the drive are SS's Dodge camper and his M-B 560SEC which is the subject of a 5-day lowrider conversion (hence the hasty garage extension).

Certainly do, thank you for raising me from my slumber.

It's one of the very last GLX saloons, of which there are 38 still in existence, though it is not known how many of these are running.

It's looks very similar to the original King Maz, which was metallic rainbow white with the four lights and the white wheel trims in the same design as the stainless steel ones. It came to a sticky end with a tinny Micra alas.

It would be an excellent acuqisition for you, sir!

Yup the same ScrapingScrap, but looks like his site doesn’t exist any more sadly. Not sure if the R4 got finished, think it got sold on.

I asked the same question on R-R forum a few months back and a number of people confirmed it was sold on. IIRC they said the new owner hadn't sorted out the glass then.http://www.rustynails.co.uk/Scrapingscrap/

  • 2 weeks later...

Not wishing to feel left, here's my offering of festive delights seen over Chrsditmas and New Year.......

Posted Image

Kick off with another shot of the Yugo. All the accessories are as offered at the time, seen one identical in some of the brochures Baz kindly gave me. It's still around but has disappeared once or twice so is still in use.

Posted Image

Not really shite, but interesting as it's very early for an R32 Skyline. This sometimes passes me in the opposite direction, usually driven by its female owner with verve :)

Posted Image

Got kind of fed up with that awful weather just before Xmas. Avant at Sainsburys for loading up with excessive amounts of mincepies and brandy butter, the SL-mobile hiding in the murk in the background.

Posted Image

An unexpected sight when traipsing around Norwich after Xmas doing the inevitable gift exchanges.

Posted Image

Minis on 10" wheels always a pleasant sight #1, bonus points here for it being a beige Clubman.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Progress on one of my cars! Gave my 323 a clean after removing the plastic wheel trims and fitting ex-Sunny B11 stainless trim rings. So nice that I sold it yesterday! Now with an R-Rer who'll use it as a replacement for his K10 Micra, so it's gone to a good home. I didn't lose any money on it, and it was a very enjoyable drive (shame not used more as Christmas interrupted things). There's an intriguing number of different versions built for different markets - Familia in Japan, GLC in USA, Ford Laser and Meteor in Oz. Always wanted a GT version, even more so now. Hmmm, what's next then?

Posted Image

Minis on 10" wheels always a pleasant sight #2. Very evocative picture for me, as this parking area is by my mum's and I can picture all sorts of old rubbish that parked since we moved there in 1978, inclduing my mum's Minis, my first car (N10 Cherry) and all sorts of stuff owned by the various neighbours.

Posted Image

Don't normally worry about Protons, but making an effort for my obscure Japanese car site/club project. Don't seem to see so many of the Aerobacks.

Posted Image

Family walk on New Years Day. Have I posted a picture of this garage before? Possibly. Oh well, I fondly remember it as they sold BL/ARG until losing that and going over to Subaru and Isuzu in the 80's, which did well for them in rural Suffolk. Since changed hands, current owner a Porsche specialist. He got in the papers claiming it was the oldest garage in the country still running, not sure how true that was.

Posted Image

Anyway, more interesting than the £20K+ 911s in the showroom was the dregs out the back, like this biffed-up LHD 924. 5-stud wheels, so maybe Turbo?

Posted Image

Posted Image

Hirst will like this, a Justy van! They may well have sold it new, and maybe for sale again now? Also saw the locally registered Justy hatch as posted here before.

Posted Image

Luxury coupe duo. MX6 for me please, I have a fondness for them even though I know they share stuff with Probe.

More to come.......

This place is awesomely crap! Bloke apparently left by his wife 25 years ago, farm is in a terrible state and I can always remember old vans there since I was young. Delivered a paper there once, he said put it in the van (again an old Transit) and I opened the door to ferrets in there

Posted Image

Possibly more interesting than the 2Cv is what might be under the tarp. At the time I didn't think it was a car, now I'm not so sure.

Posted Image

I've posted before the saloon this lad owns, here's another of his Chevettes. He recently set fire to his garage, so my mum says. This photo taken under difficult circumstances, as my daughter sitting on my shoulders.........

Posted Image

Proper shite! MkI estates seem rare to me, did they only do them for a short while? Tax out on this one, sitting next to a quiet lane where I think Noel Edmunds may have lived a long time ago?

Posted Image

Horseboxes always good for keeping an old lorry staggering on, but this M-B a little more interesting than the usual TK/D-Series. I like these, due mainly to having a couple of Majorette versions of them. This one quite old on an M-plate.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Took a detour after family stuff to snap this very tidy, late B11 Sunny coupe. Should have left a note on it  I know Baz is fond of these too.

Posted Image

Late Maestro, maybe one of those kits? Nicely bashed-about condition.

Posted Image

Quality line-up of comedy Mazda 121 with mega sunroof, R5 Campus and AX. Mrs SL despairing by this time......

Posted Image

But these last pair sneaked in under the wire due to having to make a wee stop for my daughter  This model of 323 crazy with 3-door, 5-door, saloon and estate all having different styling :x

Posted Image

Finally, maybe not shite but still a bit rubbish surely? Good solution to lack of covered storage - simply park under the A14!

There's a couple of traveller-wagon versions of those old Mercs going round Norwich. A 1976 Mercedes 406D still ranks as the slowest vehicle I have ever driven, although a B-reg 1043cc Golf firing on two cylinders gave it a good run for its money. Made my old D-Series feel like a dragster.I want that Triumph!!! Where is it??? I remember a couple of years back there was a delightfully scruffy Volvo Amazon estate parked at the side of the road in one of the villages one passes through between your good self and Norwich, but the last couple fo times I've been past that way it hasn't been there. Do you know if it's been sold? I always used to say to myself that I should stop and find out if it's for sale, but I never did get round to it.I think that Maestro is a genuine UK example - all the kits I've seen have had the wipers facing the wrong way.

Mk 1 200 Estate! Ridiculously rare these days and much sought after. The guy we nearly bought the white Mk2 estate from had last seen one sell some months ago, un MOT'd needing lots of work for well over 1K. Leave a not on it SL and if you can get it for not too much I promise you'll make a proft!

The Mk 1 Estate has always been my favourite Triumph. I'd rather have one of those than a Stag. I've had Mk 1 and Mk 2 saloons, but never managed to bag myself an estate. I don't normally spend very much on my vehicles, but I would pay several hundred pounds for an estate such as that one if one were to come up for sale.

I know the Amazon estate you mean Wuvvum, it did come up for sale about a year ago, maybe longer? Mate and I stopped and had a look around it, but for the grand they were asking it didn’t look too good to us. However it did disappear shortly afterwards, so either someone paid a lot or bid them where it hurts.Looks like that MkI estate has hit the spot, if you’ll pardon the pun. Certainly pleased me, excellent start for the first day of 2007. It’s down in Suffolk, I’ll get my stepdad to call in and see what’s the score on it. Tax only expired sometime in 2006, so it hasn’t been out of use for too long I’d imagine. It’s sitting in a very rural area, where I parked up I opened the door to come face to face with a huge, round, black pig just the other side of a fence.

WOW!....More slendid stuff from the lens of S.L!

Loving the R32 Skyline....Truly great cars....Not sure 'bout the bonnet on that one though....Don't like the way it droops down between the lights like that....Standard grille looks much better IMHO.

B11 Coop (photo'd near the Abbey in Bury St.Edmunds, unless I'm very much mistaken?) is spectacular also....I only ever seem to see the estates (or if I'm very lucky a fastback), but the coupes and two-door saloons are great Shite....That's a high-spec one in great nick - Even has it's original wheeltrims 8)....There was a similar car on Ebay not so long ago....B.I.N of about £400 IIRC....Was tempted, but it was in Cornwall I think!

Evocative pic of Riddlesdell's Boxford....Remember cycling across from Gt.Waldingfield at the age of 'bout 13 to get a brochure on the NEW MONTEGO!....Find it slightly annoying when the new proprietor of a garage tries to trade on the history/heritage of a garage....About 10 years ago, some bloke took over the building previously occupied by Dixon's of Sudbury, in Station Rd....He called the business "Dixon's Of Sudbury" and had "Established 70 years" or some such crap on his signage & advertising, despite the fact that the PROPER Dixon's had been a family owned, franchised dealership, and he was totally unconnected with it, and selling tarted bangers!

924 looks like a Turbo to me too....Wheels and air intakes on the front panel between the headlights give it away....The Turbos often tended to have two-tone paintwork aswell, although I'm not sure whether that's an original paint scheme.

I'm pretty certain I've had previous experience of that Chevette....I'm 97.6% certain that it was owned by a pleasant, bobble-hatted gent from Middleton who used to frequent Ballingdon Garage, Sudbury when I was serving my apprenticeship....Used to bring it down once a fortnight for a fiver's-worth of petrol, and to check the tyre pressures! :D If it is the one, it had a new roof panel and bonnet in about 1987, after being caught in a paticularly heavy hailstorm! Was always spotless....But that was 20 years ago :(

Baz, yes the B11 was near the Abbey etc in Bury. Thought you'd pick up on the scenic backdrop :) It was nice, definitely worth leaving a note on if ever you or I see it again. With B11s I usually prefer the early version, but I think coupes look better on the facelift as they didn't get the gormlessly large rear lights and instead kept their nice smoked units.Slight update on the Triumph estate. Stepdad has made contact with someone who knows the owner, I've got to ring this lady to get a number for them. Might need to be a degree of sensitivity as the chap is unwell, hence it not having been used for a bit, but up until recently it was reputedly his pride and joy. May have had a titled owner?

Hmmm... In my experience if a car has been someone's pride and joy for years, they react in one of two ways: either they refuse point blank to sell it and it just sits there year after year slowly rusting away, or they fail to see its little foibles (love is blind, after all) and request concours money for a resto-project car. Still very much worth an inquiry though as they are rare cars, and I did love my Mk 1 saloon. It's unlikely that estate would be quite as good value as my saloon though - that was just over 400 quid with 6 months' MoT.

...I do need to change the numberplates tho'!

Yes you do sir and all things considered I think it should be this type

Or failing that this early type of laminated plastic plate would be very period but the font probably impossible to find now. However a competent graphic designer could probably replicate the letters very nicely :)

My turn for an update, a lot to keep up with right now!

Posted Image

Not shite in the true sense, but the vastness of this GMC truck made me smile.

Posted Image

C-reg Micra getting on a bit nowadays, Sierra adding to the composition. Saw a few examples of the latter on my second trip to Bury St Edmunds within the space of one week.

Posted Image

Green van with added green mould. Colour, local reg'n and outline of logo all suggest this ex-Greene King.

Posted Image

Honda bike-shite? Think it said Super Sport. I'm clueless about old bikes, what tends to kill them off other than accident damage? Far less to get clobbered for come MoT time I would have thought.

Posted Image

Partly primered VW #1.

Posted Image

Early version of 323 following my now-sold one.

Posted Image

Partly primered VW #2.

When I'd stopped for the VW above this Fury drove past! Was chuffed to se it parking up around the corner, had a chat with its owner. Tarp conceals a '58 Fury which will become a Christine replica. He also owns these......

Posted Image

Camaro a Skid Parish car, well known locally as a US car and one-time Mitsubishi dealer plus former stock car racer. Bit of a character by all accounts.....

Posted Image

Nice Quattro, shame about the wheels and parking.

Posted Image

Been trying to get a shot of this for a while, on a road where it's not easy to stop.

Had to do some 'predictive tailing' to get this in Bstardchild's hometown! It was following me a car or two back and I figured it would be on local shopping duties only. ADO16 lovers Keef and Mr H Sceptre will approve I hope. Looked to have a lot of filler in it, and the wheels didn't look right painted like that on a Kestrel. Still, a fine thing to see out and about.

Posted Image

Took Mrs SL's Carina E to Nick's wonderfully rural bodyshop as it needs some paintwork repairs following attack by a 4x4. Don't know what's happening on this Amazon.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Seth may be familiar with this one? It's been around in several guises.

Posted Image

Finally, posted the rough Toyota before but it has moved since so good to know it's still in use. Thought it made a nice pair with the Daihatsu of similar vintage.

Someone's attempt at colour-coded bumpers? :-D

Nice pics Spotted. I think the Kestrel is my favourite of the ADO16s, but in this case it looks all wrong. The colour itself, plus as you say the attempt to match the wheels in.

Wow. Nice selection. A good spread of old Yank shite there - I used to be really into American motors a few years back, had a succession of Cadillacs, a Mustang, a Chrysler Le Baron and a vast Ford LTD station wagon with a 6.6-litre V8. Then I moved onto cars I could afford to put petrol into... I did come across Skid Parish though - like you so diplomatically put it, he's "a bit of a character"...That little 400/4 is looking a bit sorry for itself - it looks like it's going to lose its side panel at any moment, and it's got the usual '70s Honda knackered seat. Like Torsten said, they are a great little bike, although you do have to rev them to get them going and I'm always a bit dubious about thrashing a 30-year-old engine. Yup, MoT's are normally a doddle on bikes - when I've had bikes that have failed MoT's it's usually been either on wheel bearings (easy and cheap to sort) or leaking suspension, which is usually a knackered seal. I'm fortunate in that I've got a very lenient bike MoT station about 400 yards from where I live, and dear old Gary Burton in Cawston seems to be able to source almost any bit for almost any old bike from the stacks of oily crud in his barns - and they usually work too, at least for a while. The only bike I've ever had that baffled him was a Honda CB400 automatic, but then that thing baffled most people. A mate of mine's just bought himself an ADO16 - his is an Austin 1300 automatic though, not one of the posh ones. He's repainted it in two-tone blue, and it is a very nice looking car. It's also only done 27,000 genuine miles from new. I've never had an ADO16 as all the ones I've looked at have been like that Kestrel probably is - looked OK from a distance but had rot in awkward to access places (heel board, inner wing trumpets etc - I think Issigonis had a sadistic streak, either that or he had shares in a Mig welder manufacturer), but if I find another one as good as my mate's I'll probably have it.
