Mr Average
Just rummaging through my photofuckit account and came a cross this road test, I hope you agree that the SHITE-O-METER will be well in the RED with this particular triple bill. I mean Mazda Montrose! Pleased to inform you that mighty Princess sees of the the two Jonny foreigners
Split_Pin
They really gave it some when cornering didnt they? My personal pick is the Audi, just decause they seem so much rarer than the fast -appreciating Princess
Richard
I think the Mazda driver is in the process of losing it.
Karmann Ghiaman
I like the way they tested the seats for tip-back so that a sweaty bloke with glasses, a beer belly & packet of Bensons could sleep in it at any time of the day or night. (Or all night if his Mrs had chucked him out).Modern car manufacturers don't take these important things into consideration any more.

garethj
The Princess really is huge inside isn't it? If they'd have made an estate version it could have been a Peugeot 505 / Renault 21 Savannah beater 10 years early. With a brown vinyl roof too
r.welfare
The Audi is roomy in practice but the Princess is, indeed, huge inside. Amazing how many more of those two have survived than the Mazda - I know the sales must have been much greater, but the Prinny and 80 always seemed to appeal to old giffer types when new. Spottedlaurel
I love these old Group Tests, Giant Tests etc, got a big stack of them at home. Old issues of What Car? usually have several per issue so the shite quotient is satisfyingly high especially as they don’t always go for the fastest/most luxurious examples. Interesting to see a given model in the context of its peers, .Out of that lot I’d (predictably?!) go for the Montrose purely for OJC rarity and those lovely deep-dish steels. Hirst, assuming you could ever find a set they’d look great on the 323 estate. I suspect the 80 would be very competent and far more wangable than the other two, but not quite my thing (though the 5-pot version does appeal). Bet the Princess would ride nicest though – at the time I had an impression of them as being slightly a cut above the average family car and was pleased when we once got taken to Southend in one. What width are they?I'd have the Montrose as well, it sounds very much like my Galant with regards to the loose recirculating ball steering setup. Having a 5-speed is very impressive mind, sounds fairly quick too (if not a complete weapon).Love the comparison table at the end, the old bloke first owner of my Charmant did his own "shoot-out" table between the Charmant, Orion and Maestro going as far as fuel types (Charmant scored well since it could take 3-star). I'll have to scan it in at some point!
Mr_Bo11ox
You might find, after hunting down a set of those wheels in Thailand or something and getting them air-freighted back to heathrow then a taxi to Wakefield, that they are the same stud pattern as the 929 wagon, which is measured in 'cubits + spans', even more obscure than the 4x110mm jobs on the 323. Spottedlaurel
I think there is a healthy amount of dish on them, though it probably is exaggerated by the trim rings. But still good, imagine them painted black or gunmetal.Herr Bo11ox, that’s a fair point on the PCD. Mazda’s wheel/hub department seems to have been enjoying a few too many shandies at lunchtime in this era. What’s even odder is that none of them coincide with Ford’s 4x108mm.
