I had an X300 like that a little while ago. If you don't cane it too much it returns reasonable MPG, and they're easy to work on. However,if like me you've got a boot full of demolition gear and 3 passengers averaging about 15 stone apiece, it'll drink like George Best. However, £795 is the price of a good weekend out.

I do like those early X300s. I love the fact that they seem to have used all their money redoing the exterior so they just bunged the crappy old XJ40 dash in unchanged. If I had one of them it'd have to be a 3.2 manual though - slightly less daft fuel bills than the 4.0 or the autos. Although if I found a V12 X300 cheap I'd be extremely tempted.

Is the bizarrely rotten front wing bizarre because the rest of the car hasn't followed suit yet? Apparantly the 4.0 is the best engine of the lot by the way, or so a couple of Jag nuts told me when I was running a series 3 4.2 auto.Hell of a lot of car for the money and must be worth that all day long if running ok and a bit of MOT left?

I'd have to disagree a little here - assuming that is a 3.2 executive, 800 is about the book value nowadays. These X300's have taken a right tumble recently. If it were low mileage and mint, then you'd be looking at more (up to 2k), but that front wing, and a probable 170k on the clock puts it there for sure.

Agree with Wuvvum on the X312 front - I am actively searching for one right now. There are a few turning up at the moment so will wait for the low mileage one owner job that's bound to come along. These are valued at no more than 3.5k at the moment, and my older XJ81 (V12 XJ40) would be lucky to get 1.5k (twice what I paid for it, although a third what I have spent on it in 4 years!!).

As an occasional use hobby car, a 93 onwards Jag should be fine. For me, I like the fact that I can have a 6.0 V12 without needing to buy an A-M, or a Ferrari 599. And as hard to believe as it is, I can get 22mpg (or 24.3 if you believe the optimistic computer) on a 75mph cruise. The same as I got in a Freelander V6 that got me to Heathrow last month.

You'll bag yourself a 99 X308 for less than a grand soon - specially a Nikosil without a green sticker in the engine bay.

However, expect this quite often though:

Hey Tom, sorry to sound nerdy but is your V12 a late one? Only I seem to recall someone saying when they first bought out the XJ40 they couldn't get the V12 to fit in so only 6 cylinder models on offer initially.

It's a 4.0 Auto. I can remember big engine cars, particularly Jags, being virtually worthless in the late 1970s. It wasn't until the cla$$ic craze of the mid 1980s that old Jaguars climbed above scrap value.

Large cars from the mid 1990s to around 2000 are going to become decimated over the next five years. But tell me, is it a wise man who sells one right now due to concerns over fuel prices and falling values, or does a wise man buy one to keep on a SORN for ten years in a warm garage and then make a bit of money on it when prices come back up?I can just about remember the petrol price rises of the early 1980s, it killed countless Granadas, Zeypher Mk4s, old Jags etc. It was that decimation which partly led to many old Jags suddenly gaining value, such was the numbers crushed or bangered. V12 E Types were worth next to nothing, now even a grotty one with bits missing is worth at least £4k....

A friend of the family bought a pretty good E type when they were worthless just for the private plate, transferred the number then just threw the car away... I would say he's kicking himself now but he's actually pretty wealthy so he's probably not that bothered  Still got the plate though, been on about 7 or 8 of his cars now...

My XJ12 is a 1994 L, so has the 6.0 not the 5.3The earliest V12 was a 1993 on a K plate - Daimler had the Double Six at the same time which sells at a slight premium over the Jag even though the Sovereign square headlamps do nothing for the appearance I think. The V12 was launched along with the facelift - this was basically the interior, but some work (not much though) was done to the engine bay for the plumbing for the 12. The only other exterior major change was the dropping of the chrome headlamp cowels. They were body colour coded after 93. You can recognize a 12 without walking around the back by the gold growler badge on the grille top. Also, a small red and grey coachline was unique to the 12 as well. All 12's had the full chrome treatment (but most of it will have fallen off by now!) The last V12 XJ40's will be found on an N plate even though the X300 had replaced it by M. I hear rumours of one or two R plate X312'sm but most are on M, N and P. I think between Daimler and Jaguar badges only 1800 were made. Best of all is the Daimler Century (6 or 12) that had the beautiful interior and the 2+2 seating. These still fetch 15k. The rumours about BL forcing Jag to use a V8 from Rover hence the straight 6 only option till 93 are false. A 6.0 engine was already in the car by 1991 thanks to the TWR version. Nice, but more fragile, and some of them had the terrible dash from the pre-facelift XJ40. That'll be nerdy enough I reckon.

Righto then, more nerdiness:Some masochist has taken the 6.0 V12 and bored and stroked it out to 10.2 to power his boat.Any V12 XJ40 (XJ81 was the official code) sitting low at the back will be because the cheapskate owner has replaced the self-levelling rear suspension with XJ6 springs. That'll be £650 to put right before the next MOT - they will fail on the wrong springsUnlike the S600 and the BMW750 which were luxury flagships as well as power flagships, the XJ81 came with a slightly lower spec than the standard Sovereign. You still had to tick a box for front fog lamps, alloy spare wheel and a sunroof. The auto mode on the A/C controlled the temp to 24 degrees. So it heats for most of the time (which is why no-one ever seems to bother fixing the a/c when it fails). Does have a manual mode, but not many owners bothered to read the handbook. 3 previous owners had replacement condensers according to my service history, but a specialist recently told me that the a/c would have blown cold if manual was selected and the dial turned down to the blue bit.and one certifiably nerdy one:The XJ81 / X312's V12 is 5994cc, but the XJS of the same period is 5993. All official records show 5993, but Jag say different without explaining the extra 0.834 cc per pot. That's me nerded out.

A-ha! A man who might be able to help! As well as the Rover, I currently have 2 Jags - an 02 S Type 3.0 SE:

GR8 4 DRAG RACIN

And a 2008 X Type 2.0 Turbo Diesel

Now I know the S was built at Castle Bromwich, but I thought the X Types were Scouse, made in the old Ford (Halewood?) plant. My (frankly useless) dealer told me the X was made in Coventry, but as far as I know they only make leather seats and wood trim there now.

Any ideas?

Cheers!

Everyone it seems has a Jag story. So.......I used to work with a bloke into Jags, and back in 1973 he bought an early 2.8 XJ6 with a blown engine. For an engine he bought a rusty 3.8 E Type roadster for £80, took the engine out and chopped the car up into smallish bits with a felling axe before depositing the remnants in a skip.A skip?? "Yeah. I was building an extension at the time so I could bury it in rubble". :D I for one recall scrapyards in the late seventies having old Mark 2 and Mark 10 wrecks piled up.

Your dealer is talking through his hat I think, Ashmicro, I'm pretty sure they are still made in Halewood alongside the Freelanders. Everything else is built at Castle Bromwich, next to Fort Dunlop alongside the M6. I thought Coventry (Brown's Lane) was dead, but it may still make small bits.Is your X-Type the new one with the badge in the middle of the grille? Interested to know what they've changed for '08 - I looked at an '06 model (2.0D Classic) a couple of years back before deciding it was a bit too tweedy for me, and chose a 9-3 instead.

AshMicro and I have similar tastes it seems. As well as the Jag, I run a Rover 75 TD on a 54 plate. Splendid vehicle.Toyed with the idea of an S-Type recently to replace the V12, but just can't bear to part it. So seeking another one to park next to it instead. Anyone see a V12 X300 with low mileage in cherished condition, let me know.

The 1994 version - again, plenty of toys, but not many of the work any more.

This is the the day I collected it from the previous owner. Quickly followed by the replacement of the XJ6 rear suspension... I did not get on with the low rider look

Looks nice in the morning sunshine (car, not wifey). Although I should be nicer to her really, she slapped on an extra few quid to win the ebay bid without me knowing after consoling me when I was outbid with the 500 she let me initially blow. Ahh.

Sorry if I keep posting this pic, but I NEVER get bored of looking at it, so annoyingly share it with you yet again.

While we're at it, I think my fleet got wiped with the last purge, so for your delectation:

ChinaTom - are you still in China, or back in the UK at the mo?

In China. Just had a week out - few days in UK, few days in Norway (shite-free Bergen), and a few days in France/Germany. Took a few snaps on the roads in St Quentin - bit of a shite mecca actually, but only got a few with the mobile phone.

Dedra diesel and 104 in the same shot.

There's not much to snap where I am now - mediaeval is a compliment to this place (on Russian border up near khabarovsk - 6 hours flight away from the lush tropical paradise of my normal Chinese abode). Plenty of those stoopid egg shaped trikes and knock-off Daihatsu Dominae, but cars are rare here. For some colour and perspective on my current dire circumstance, I walked across the road into the factory construction site this morning, past the bus-stop, and 6 old blokes were waiting - 2 of them were having a poo. On the street. Chatting away to their mates. Having a poo! It just ain't right.

Looking forward to the end of this contract...
