Hello all. Most of these were taken over the holiday period when visiting friends/relatives and of course the most shite route was always taken.

 

We start with the dream VW garage.

 

And I’ve been to this place in Connecticut before but there’s always something to see.

 

This had a hand painted rear end and stick on gold trim everywhere. CLASS!

 

These were 10 miles from my inlaws house, discovered whilst out ‘shopping’

 

and more local treats

Must be time for an update because the camera is full. The first few NYC spots I have to attribute to a friend of mine who works in the city and knows I enjoy the obscure.

 

First was this beautiful Alfa taken outside Grand Central, I have never seen one in my time here.

A large branch came off a tree in my in laws yard, affording this delightful view into the neighbors taste in lawn sculpture. Jealous?

 

Bo & Luke rollin' into Westchester county, pity but Daisy was nowhere to be seen.

 

This Galant was completely stock aside from some minor detailing to the rear.

here's an update for the first half of the summer. I managed to drive by my favorite upstate delership to see what new stock they had in, the 'Maserati' was still lurking, here's what they had on offer:

Hello all, I had a temporary change of job assignment which involved driving a van round some of the less wealthy areas of Westchester County for the last three weeks, most of these shots are from that period so here goes.

I chatted to the owner of this Morris, his dad had imported it years ago when it was nearly new

Chevy Impala Coupe, about 1970. Impala being Chevrolet's full-size family car, this is very much equivalent to a two-door FD Victor, if Vauxhall had ever made one.

 

 

1951 Mercury with the roof of a 1957 Oldsmobile grafted on, I think. Not to mention the extended rear wings and I'm sure a host of other delicious upgrades. I do hope we get to see it finished! It has potential to be one very stylish hunk.... or a pile of cr4p, but I hope it survives.

Thanks for the comments, you don't see much 60s stuff unless it's clearly cherished but you do see quite a few 70's clunkers still chugging away as daily's, I think if you do basic oil changes every few thousand miles (there are stacks of while you wait places) they'll run for ever until they rust out.

Class thread! If it wasn't for the utterly silly fuel consumption/size/parts/space/bravery (delete as appropriate) I'd love a 70s American land yacht.

^Not necessarily as daft as you'd think. A mate of mine ran an '86 Chrysler sedan as his only car for a good while. Admittedly, that was about 10 years ago, when petrol was a damn sight cheaper, but even so; it would just about scrape 20mpg on a motorway run, with the cc set to 55-60. 15 was more like average (he's always driven like an old git...), 10 if he fancied hearing the V8 in full flight for a bit, 8 if nailed.

Now think how much American metal you could get for a couple of grand; maybe run it on gas. Up to a point (late 80's?), these things are as tough as a tank - thick metal and unstressed powertrains - and dead simple to work on. My mate's no Mr B or John F, and he tickled his with the spanners without trouble; when a lass in a Clio skipped in front of him, and slammed the brakes on, the resulting collision caused plenty of damage to the Clio. The Chrysler's bumper was dented, and the trim between the bumper and valance was wrinkled. Even the bent angle-iron bracket was easily straightened.

I'd be interested to see how a year's running costs stacked up against a brand new cheap shopping trolley. Given that I'd have the Falcon wagon in a heartbeat (if there was a decimal point in its' 5 grand pricetag...), I'm not even nearly comparing like with like. I reckon it would have anything new that size beaten all ways for a year's motoring!

Wouldn't kick the Impala coupe out of the garage either

When I was an innocent 14 year old living in Vancouver, Canada we had a Chrysler Cordoba as an everyday car and to be honest it wasn't too bad, even by the standards of late 1970's USA tin. It even did 23mpg.

As for running these things as dailies, I've done it on a fairly regular basis since 1999 (which all came to a grinding halt when I skipped the country in 2009). I always bought cheap, for cash, and tried to keep at least two in circulation at any time. You've seen the pictures... My father-in-law never got over "all these big cars" I kept showing up in, and never believed me when I pointed out I was spending much less than his other son-in-law (brand new Fiesta with built-in depreciation) and that overall, running these was cheaper than drinking and smoking. Which it is, and a WHOLE lot more fun!

Hello all, we have here a bunch of spots from the rest of the summer, as ever perhaps quantity over quality but I hope some will be of interest (especially a couple of Rovers). Most were in Westchester County but I stumbled across a shitefest visiting some friends on the posh end of Long Island - my camera died in the line of duty this trip (dropped in a large puddle) but the memory card survived.

 

We start with this tiny thing, I know the US had a 5 minute fling with the 'Smart' but I could not identify this.
