58classiccars
I was driving my triumph 2000 round the cromer carnival a few years ago and half way round she boiled up, I got it back to the field and took the cap off and this black thing floated up. I got the car home and took the rad off, after turning it upside down, 20, yes 20 old chestnuts fell out. Turned out that ground up chestnuts was known to stop the rad from leaking, only someone put them in hole, they must have been there for years. I know if you rub soap on a petrol tank it can block a leak. Anyone got anymore old remedies.
55bloke
My dad regularly broke an egg into the rad of our Ford Pop- plugged the riddled radiator quite nicely for a while! I do believe he did once actually use a pair of tights to replace a broken fan-belt too!
Richard
I once bought a pair of tights specially to drive the water pump on my Viva when the alternator fell off. It worked for one revolution. I've tried one of those emergency belts you used to get too, that was equally useless but much more expensive.

nigel bickle
I punched the fan through the radiator on my old MG Midget - following an emergency stop -right outside the casino in Monaco many years back.We filled the hole with body filler -and once set - the chef 'loaned me' a dozen eggs to stop the myriad of tiny leaks. Worked well enough to complete to the tour of Italy and home -even without any fan left.
