The Wedgister - Princess and Ambassador Records

Recommended Posts

UPDATE: 2nd January 2022.  Updated all images on file.  I'll be doing some re-editing of the pages as I have the time spare to get everything up to date, so some information may appear incorrect until I've completed that.

Special mention to Autoshiter Keef for inspiring this with his fascinating Wolseley Six thread and to  the Leyland Princess forum which was a useful resource to kick things off here.

I do have details for most of the registrations listed thanks to the efforts and memories of all those that have contributed and the resources available through the DVLA.  This is not a list of surviving cars, it is a list of all cars I have evidence of.  I will also be listing cars that live in other countries.  Models covered in the Wedgister are just the 18-22, Princess, and Ambassador, but does include coachbuilt variants such as hearses and limousines.

The yellow one is a home brewed jobbie. Im certain its been magazine featured and, certainly, has done the rounds on the web.

I think its been altered since the last time I saw it ( wheels?) and im sure it used to have Rover 600 series front seats.

It actually looked much better when it was magazine featured.

Edit: Its on aronline.

I occasionally see a dark coloured one parked in the driveway of a rather posh house in Fleet, Hampshire - though I never get a chance to have a decent look at it! I know it's not much to go on, but is this a 'known' car? It looks lovely from what I've seen.

A few from the Trigger archives.

I've posted this many times before, It used to live outside the local pub, and was on ebay for over £2000 for a while, I think it only had 60000 miles on the clock and I have a funny feeling it's now in Ireland but i could be wrong.

I started a register of Jimps when I was younger, of which the factory produced 67. This might be a big thread! =) I'd be interested to start a Talbot Samba register for sure, probably a seperate website to AS though for fear of sparking some kind of Protonesque uproar!

Does anyone mind if I rehost the above to my Photobucket? If I find stuff online, I generally do that anyway unless it's been watermarked or something. At some point I'll do a Trigger and go through all of the above on the Doovla.

I clocked a dead princess on the A53 near Shrewsbury today, it's in some sort of farmers storage/junk compound surrounded by knackered old caravans and lorry tyres. I just caught a flash of the front of it sticking out from behind a barn as I drove past! I must go in for a gander next time. If anyone asks me what i'm doing i'll just tell em to piss off.

Here's my mate's Morris, from my spottage thread. He's had it since new. It's called "Magic Hour" (Selwyn Froggett quote...... RIP Bill) and I am hoping to inherit it when he kicks the bucket...... but I doubt that I will... I'd rather he were alive TBH.

I'll update/amend this as more appear. Gives me something to do. I'm using the DVLA database primarily for information on a car's status. Cars are split into categories and then listed alphabetically by registration.

@Albert: If that's not the same Morris in blue as I saw on the Princess forum (can't find the picture) then that means I now know of 3 Morris Princesses. They're really quite rare. Oh, and you caught my typo at the same time I did, I've corrected it now.

Oh, he knows it's rare. He bought it and people thought he was mad, spunking all his savings on a new car, but he's kept it through thick and thin. I'd like to find him a rear seat back in black cloth... the sun has perished his original one. It's suffering, but he loves it to bits. He has an Ambastardor he uses for the odd spare here and there.... The last failure was a clutch hydraulic part, it took about 2 hours to sort including diagnosis. He's a top bloke, and I'd love to get him more active in the enthusiast scene, but he's the shy retiring type, and keeps himself to himself. He used to work at Inernational Harvester in Doncaster, on the production line....!!

What manufacturer name are you using on the DVLA site? The Princess seems to be one of those cars that could be registered under various different names, i.e. British Leyland, Leyland Cars, BLMC etc. It might be worthwhile running some of those you couldn't find through http://www.cartell.ie to see if they come up under a different name.

EDIT: Just tried a couple: VUK491S comes up as 'Leyland Cars' and XEM805W as 'Austin Morris'.

@Albert: I'll keep an eye out for a black seat, sometimes interior trim comes up through the club and I'm sure they'd be more than happy to help with preserving a Morris. The chap sounds like a bit of a winner to me, I like his ethos towards his car.

@quicksilver: I had been using Austin Morris which brings up the most results, and other variations on a theme, but not Leyland Cars so I'll give that a try when I go through the list again. I'll give that cartell link a go later too, see if I can fill any gaps in there.

Prototypes/Pre-production

YJ0-71R - Prototype Morris 1800

YJ-71R-PrincessPrototype-1800.jpg

YJO71R is an oddball - it is chassis No.1 of the regular build and was kept by BL at the Cowley service department for dealer/mechanic training before being registered and sold. It is actually an Austin with the regular bonnet and Trapezoidal headlamps but was registered as a Morris in 1977 - by this time the 18/22 was neither an Austin or Morris 1800 but a Princess.

I bought it in 1994 a few days after buying a white prototype Morris, KJO350N. I sold both of them to Nick Larkin. The above pic was taken by either myself or Nick at L.C Hughes scrapyard where both cars were found.

I'm sure I spotted a blue Wedge near Donny Racecourse a couple of years back parked on a side street - if this is that car I must be up for the "Best unintended rarity spot that didn't prompt further investigation" award :(

@rev: That's a great slice of info, I had the vaguest notion of the story behind that one, but you've filled out some of the details much better for me, thank you.

@michael t: yes please, I can then add a few more details to the database on what's out there.

I've found 76 cars at the time of writing, Just got to sort out the details on them all now. I'm also aware that some pictures are unreliable as the number plates on the cars don't necessarily match the car it's on. Oh, and I don't think I'm going to do anything with the Irish cars, I'm not sure how one goes about checking on those.

Bear in mind it was probably 12 years back now but there was an absolutely mint Princess at a taxi firm in Llanidloes, Mid Wales. If you type Central Garage, Long Bridge St, Llanidloes, Powys, SY18 6EE into Google maps you'll see the place in question. It's a garage as well as a taxi firm so it could have been a customer's car. Long shot of all long shots but if you're bored one day it might be worth giving them a bell or something.
