Right you are!

 

I remember this face-lifted R9 being advertised locally a few years ago. It looked rather smarter then, but the stoved in back door was mentioned. As was the 1.5vvti engine from a Vios or summert.

That thing passing is a step-thru and side-car, with a canopy over the driver, delivering unsecured cooking gas bottles.

Bonuses in the background here too, including a Mira Classic and a Cedric 230!

At many intersections there are hawkers selling to the waiting cars, often little jasmine garlands for the mirror, this one has a sort of crispy dry pancake. Of course the camera came out for the CX, but the bike jumped in!

Krujoe got to within a stone's throw of Laos last year so I thought I'd just add a few from over the border. There is the odd 2CV and Renault 4 still biffing around but i haven't had the chance to snap them. Some old colonial untouched architecture may be of interest too.

Bloody fantastic amount of stuff on view there. Thanks for taking the time and effort to snap it all. The Publica looks really cool, as sort of a bastard child of a daf and a Trabbie if you squint hard enough at it. I want one!!!! I take it that there isn't much of an MOT type requirement there then? :lol::lol::lol:

Blimey, that's a toughie. Could be anything - Pug 404? Ford Zephyr/Zodiac? Audi F103 even? Can't even guess at the further one. You'll have to go back and find out or I'll get no sleep.

any better? The back one looks to be a 2-door and I was thinking a Ford of some sort. The 4 door is likely to be French tbh, just about every car in Savannakhet (backwater town and 400 miles from Vientiane) at that time would have been French. I assumed 404 but can't convince myself. Next time I get some time away from site I'll have another look. Doubt any of them will be moving much in the near future.

Thank you CT for those pictures, interesting stuff. Some of those busses and trucks are similar to the older stuff here, but I see very few old French cars. I have only ever spotted two or three 2CVs, one of which had come overland from France. Never seen a Renault 4.

My first thought was that your saloon might be a fintail Merc, though I’m probably wrong.

This caught my eye as we waited for our grub at a roadside stall; a naked Publica!

Completely scrubbed clean of all its paint, hopefully half way through prepping for a shiny new coat. I've seen some ropey looking examples in the past, so maybe it is a re-spot.

 

I was only just quick enough to get this one too... a Compagno pick-up no less!

Dan, I thought you were onto something. Until I looked at the sills, they're quite different.

 

Anyhoo, this evening, I am mostly fueled by something called "Kaltenberg Pils". The six-pack was a present my wife picked up for me when she stepped over the border at Mae Sai/Tachilek on the northernmost tip of the country, in the province of ChiangRAI. It costs 500B (£10) for foreigners to cross the bridge to Burma, but Thais only pay 20B, so I stayed on this side with a mate while the girls did what they do best. (Shopping.)

North of us is just a small corner of eastern Burma between here and South-East China. Thailand has a long history of Chinese immigrants, and this is more evident the further north you go (Yaowarat is the exception... more of that later...) In Chiang Rai many of the signs are in Chinese, and there are a lot more obviously Chinese faces:

A mobile PA of questionable taste, built on a Nissan NV, and probably designed for advertising. These trucks blare their way around town at walking speed with big hoardings on the sides. They are deafeningly loud and hold up the traffic. But the Thai’s don’t get annoyed, nor do they listen to the message - a complete waste of time and space imho.

 

As we headed north to Mae Sai we stopped off for gas on the edge of town. An LPG fill up takes a bit longer than petrol, so I wandered across the concrete to snap this rather smart 132.

I was also spending a moment admiring the C5 when a chap came out of the office and called me inside. A confirmed Citroenut!

He was proud to show off his office accessories; he told me the coffee table was made from a CX steering wheel, the leather sofa lifted from an XM…

Unsurprisingly the C5 (a rare thing here) was off the road in need of parts from overseas. This time: hydraulic pump failure. More of a surprise is the way he’s finding parts; he was waiting for a front cut to come from Japan! I have seen stacks of imported front cuts in Chiang Mai, but they have mostly been run-of-the-mill Jap crap.

 

I could have chatted for hours, but there were 10 of us going up to Mae Sai, and half the group was waiting up the road in a pick-up. I promised I'd call in next time we are in town.

There was a Thai policeman right there, and I pointed it out to him and the Burmese driver, then we all had a good laugh as they told me it was water for cooling. Burmese Lifan Hybrid Cooling FTW!

I'm GR8 with reading the province names from number plates! Writing Thai is still a distant dream though, I'll never completely master that.

These Bay window efforts are not uncommon in the hippy north of Thailand, but I have noticed this year that an overwhelming majority of them have been converted into fashionable coffee bars. Like the cream one in the background. How original. Have a brown one. As yet unconverted, but already piled up inside with café supplies…

Regarding motors in Thailand.. As your man pointed out pretty much on page one, you really appreciate anything with four wheels. Virtually every vehicle has a taxi existance... With a pick up you're likely to be carting six people and half a ton of shopping. They are buying your meal, your beer.

Not much keeps it's original engine if some resourceful souls can find a cheap alternative.

Of course, in the sun, these cars merely sit and bake.

I was going to post some pics, but you have to go thru a doodah site to upload em. Chiang Mai and Bangkok have alot of what this site would see as gems... So much so that you could do with a "rep" photographing and finding a price the owner would part with. Cars etc hold their price very well,. Labour is cheap and very resourceful..

And that eternal sun creates a time machine for motors that have sagged in half thirty years ago here in AutoShitey! :mrgreen: .

I think the Ford Magentis is some form of 97-02 Mazda 626 based thing. Ford just badge engineered Mazdas in the 1990s to give them a range to sell in South East Asia - the Bongo Friendee was sold as the Ford Freda, for example.

 

On the saloon from a couple of pages back, I reckon a Fiat 1800 from 59-67, like this one:

Good effort dear friend, but incorrect.

 

'Magentis' - that would be Kia, and although Kia and Ford have had some shared projects (eg Pride/Festiva/Maz121), Ford

didn't sell anything by that name.

The 626 was widely re-badged as the Ford Telstar. I have not seen any 97-02 shape Telstars, but the previous generation

are a very occasional spot.

Ford obviously figured that Asia-Pacific wasn't ready for the radical new Focus in 1999 or whenever it was, so they played it safe with a re-skin of the Mazda Protegé 323, another immensely forgettable model. I have a borrowed pic until I feel frisky enough to find my own.

Are you in a Laotian or Cambodian vehicle there CT? Looks LHD and the tax disk isn't Thai. In Thailand the year is 2555! The Thais love it; 555 sounds like 'ha ha ha' in Thai. They use '555' instead of 'lol'.

i suspected that blue one might cause a few problems. That ridge on the boot is a blade of grass - don't let my crappy photography fool you! Next time I pass I'll stop for a better look. I thought MAzda 800 when I first saw it, as there are a few pick-ups still knocking around; but the rear door window isn't right. Honda 1300 was another initial thought, but definitely not. Compagno Berlina?

 

The first one is a 120Y - you can't go 10 minutes without seeing one it seems.

 

That was a Cambodian vehicle, cutting through Thailand on our way from Oudon Meanchay to Savannakhet, Laos.
