MEGABUMP INDEED!

This is still the best thread on Autoshite, I might go all the way through it again tomorrow. I think Michiel is correct, no drop-top Coronas, but that one would've started out as a lovely 2dr hardtop version which is still an incredible spot, even in its butchered state

I

Think

I

Just

Spaffed

My

Pants

That is lovely.

Thanks Ted. (I think!)

It was indeed very clean, looked to be fresh out of the paint shop. Can't really see in my pics, but the yellow had a nice pearl effect.

Do you have any more in you?

OK then, another angle:

P1200993.jpg

It matches the curb nicely, don't you think?

P1200995.jpg

@ Barrett: Thank you for your comments! I CAN HAZ FANS! I knew some people would like to see a few more from the land of smiles.

Right, on with the show. These two need an appointment at the paint shop:

P1210846.jpg

P1210881.jpg

Some might say this does too, but I'd roll as-is.

P1210968.jpg

Outside our apartment again:

P1210924.jpg

P1210926-1.jpg

We can never have two many of these things:

P1210987.jpg

That cauldron thing is a public dustbin made from old tyres. They're a common sight in some housing estates; I think they're an ace idea. (When people keep the lids on, that is.)

My favourite shape of these little cuties:

P1210801.jpg

But what's that in the background?

P1210799.jpg

I *heart* these, too. Less keen on the bright yellow vinyl interior tho.

P1210798.jpg

One more Mazda 1000 Pick-up for today.

P1210994.jpg

When she'd finished parking it up, we bought some freshly cut watermelon and guava from the owner of this fruit stall.

On the ice in the cabinets I can see watermelon, papaya, guava, rose-apples and jack-fruit.

The craftsmanship of the conversion was rather special, but distinctly northern Thai in style! The lady was proud to explain her husband had constructed it for her.

While she was slicing and bagging, this passed by:

P1210996.jpg

BOOM!

Unrivaled Catch of the day. Another change of underwear for Ted please!

Thank you Earl! Loving your work also.

On with the show.

MOAR Subaru action, just because WE LOVE IT.

That Hiace almost looks familiar, is it the BongoCar (repainted) I wonder?

Excuse me while I trawl through again and find it...

...

Here it is:

P1030576.jpg

P1030577.jpg

I think it's a different one. Anyway, they're always a joy to see! More Chiang Mai shite:

P1210811.jpg

Look closely...

P1210826.jpg

Yes, that is an Isuzu Vertex next to an equally rare KE35R(?) Corolla pillarless coupe.

P1210808.jpg

Sometimes they just seem to wait in lines for me:

P1210812.jpg

P1210814.jpg

P1210813.jpg

P1210815.jpg

I'll say it again, sometimes it's like shooting fish in a barrel!

That Galant looks very much like one I papped cruising one night in Bangkok* a couple years ago. I'm sure it can't be the same one, I won't go checking now.

Tonight's Catch of the day was previewed in the save the Compagno thread.

P1210904.jpg

P1210908.jpg

P1210905.jpg

That's all for today, I'll leave you with a random image from Chiang Mai shopping centre.

:D Michiel, grab a cheap flight, I'll aid negotiations, you drive it home. Deal?

Barrett's not wrong, Sunny B110 / 1200 (I think), and certainly worth a mention, they're not as common as the later ones. I'm sure someone will get around to resurrecting this one, but the workshop behind had plenty of work on when I papped it!

More Datsun action...

P1210818.jpg

Yet another configuration of Mira.

P1210988.jpg

Though this one doesn't look like a factory option!

P1210989.jpg

Also non-standard, a typical grease-monkey's dream machine.

P1210797.jpg

I just noticed the stool ^ made from an old clutch. If you ever stop to have your step-thru scooter tweaked, you'll see similar ones welded from sprockets and chain-rings, and may even be offered a seat on one!

Here's another bodged together tow truck. This one is an old Nissan with a newer Ford front end.

P1210148.jpg

You'll have to take my word for the Nissan bit, I can't find another angle for you now. I know where it lives, I'll go and find it in a couple months!

Another variety of Ford Laser, this one based on a 323C:

P1210802.jpg

Honda "Freed". Modern, but I've not seen one in the UK. And uncommon as yet in Thailand, I suspect they're either unofficial, or Honda put a premium tag on them.

P1210828.jpg

It looks like a grown-up Jazz, and is conveniently in convoy with one. Same colour too!

Check out this big FO weapon:

P1210146.jpg

I'm guessing the 'Jeep' badge might be a clue, but as I've said, I know nothing of American(?) stuff.

P1210147.jpg

I did enjoy the hand-carved chock. Its thundering heart:

P1210150.jpg

Shit or Shite? Catch of the day:

P1210866.jpg

We had something similar in our eBay thread recently, but that had 'stacker' lights iirc.

P1210868.jpg

Sorry for the poor night-time shots. I did go back in daylight but it was gone from the restaurant car park by then.

Shite quiz: More Barry damage, can you tell what it is?

Thank you guys, well done Berty.

P1210123.jpg

Sign reads 'For Sale, Cheap'.

The headlights are a puzzle though... I'm thinking Syline but probably wrong. Dunno why they bothered though, it's only the second Calibra I've seen in the country - they're rarer than Allegros, Mk1 BX's and Compagnos!

Ha ha Michiel! I did try 'Malham to Chiang Mai' on Google maps, but it spat out its dummy. Maybe because the North Sea is in the way.

I suspect the process might be slightly less simple than I intimated... however, a certain Mr Bickle has been in touch to discuss certain possibilities.

Andrew, another for you.

Complete with RAC badge, this down-at-heel Jag was probably a special import, but there are a few about. Not many.

P1210134.jpg

None of the old British stuff is common, but I tend to pap it when I see it. The most 'common' are ADO16s, the odd Allegro etc, and a few 90's Rovers. And series Land Rovers of course. I suspect the majority were sold in Thailand officially, but were never mainstream. The Rover 600 and 800 may even have been brought in as kits and assembled locally, but I'd have to check on that. I suspect very few have come from nearby countries. Diplomatic imports might account for some.

More images for your perusal.

Apologies if I've posted any of these before; these are the last few from the current online album. Fret not, I have another album uploaded and ready to go!

P1210135.jpg

P1210070.jpg

Some fewer-wheeled tat.

P1210124.jpg

This was still in single figures on the clock - brand new.

P1210096.jpg

The brand? Not Honda, but a Thai copy "Tiger" brand. Tiger have been around a few year churning out inferior copies of various Honda step-thrus, mostly Waves, but recently they jumped on the retro bandwagon and started selling these. The cheap "Retro" badge kind of spoils it.

Their most interesting effort was a factory offroad version of the Wave 125. I think I have a photo somewhere.

Edit; here it is, the Tiger Smart CX125. It has a lever on the left, so they probably have a proper clutch. Which is nice.

P1100763.JPG

This I found in a big junk-filled open-sided warehouse which operates as a "We buy and sell anything" store:

P1210890.jpg

It looks nearly new. It is a sort of Tuk-Tuk thing as seen in other provinces, but this one looks Chinese. They all have rediculously steep looking fork angles.

P1210893.jpg

"Fly Dragon" brand :D

P1210892.jpg

I *heart* these 323s.

P1210153.jpg

Make mine an original one, in a pale colour, without a "Powered by Mitsubishi" badge from an air-con unit, please.

P1210154.jpg

I don't mind a modern lump shoehorned in to give it a new life, but do keep it in the family! Is there something odd about the headlights on this one?

P1210817.jpg

I never tire of these Datsun 620s. Just so right.

P1210152.jpg

These body-shop snaps make Catch of the Day. The CX is a rare and special sight.

P1210921.jpg

I have photographed the Lotus before; it has been in the same state there for years, almost as a mascot at the front of the shop. A friend went to find out more about it, all he got was "Not for sale!"

P1210919.jpg

Can anyone tell how genuine / original it is from that picture?

  • 1 month later...

Thanks again F-Pop, I've really enjoyed your spotting work too.

Sooooooooo, here we are at long last, back in CM. For a cool 10 weeks! Yay!

We do deserve it, we have worked almost every day since we landed home in January.

I had wanted to prime you up with a few posts of previous years' pictures, but the last few weeks before we flew this time have been mental busy with work and stuff. I mean like 18 hours a day busy. So we're right back into it.

First off, to celebrate this week's sourcing of a potential addition to the Bickle stable, have an as yet un-posted Compagno.

P1110422.JPG

I had forgotten about this shot, probably because it such an appalling photograph, but it popped up on my screensaver which is set to scroll through the albums on my laptop. Picasa tells me "12 Apr 2008", just before our relocation to sunny Yorkshire.

See the Catch of the Day ^up there, last time from the body-shop? Well, I went past there again today. Of course there has been no progress on the Lotus, but the CX rolling shell was looking resplendent in a new coat of metallic dark cherry red. It was near the back so sadly no picture today. I hope I get another look. On view today:

P1270072.jpg

This place seems to specialise in rally stuff.

P1270071.jpg

Oh dear. I see this may not end well.

P1270070.jpg

I already have six Photobucket pages of spots from our three days here, but don't think you're having them all now! That's about 30 images a day for you lot and I haven't even been trying. God knows what figures I'll achive if I'm let loose on a bike in this town. If I keep going at this rate, p'bucket will shut me down FO SHO.

More silliness:

P1270051.jpg

A narrowed Cefiro?

P1270050.jpg

Nope. Nissan NV, barried. It should look more like this one with a JDM saloon grille:

P1270054.jpg

Love thy neighbour!

P1260975.jpg

P1260978.jpg

This was rather special:

P1260974.jpg

P1260973.jpg

P1260969.jpg

P1260972.jpg

It might have made COTD had the 'poke' not have been this silly.

We took the 850 in to have the LPG system checked over after a year of doing nothing. I had a wander around their workshop:

P1270058.jpg

P1270056.jpg

P1270055.jpg

At first glance nothing special...

P1270059.jpg

...but I've not seen a 406 with a back wiper before.

P1270060.jpg

Probably not factory, (assembled locally?) but looked well done.

I've always thought these are rather special.

P1270062.jpg

Twin turbo'd and running on gas!

P1270064.jpg

My old Lumix Leica is struggling increasingly with low light, and the on/off switch has a mind of its own, so may be replaced during this trip. My old boy who has serviced and repaired it in the past, has shut down his shop now, so the old faithful may be replaced during this trip.

Talking of old boys, I witnessed this piloted serenely by a gent of at least 80.

P1270068.jpg

Fading naturally and gracefully, the way God intended. Honest as the day is long, Catch of the Day WINNAR.

P1270069.jpg

Peace.

Very interesting stuff, that Pug rear wipe especially. I've been out of the UK for too long to see 406s day to day but I really thought that most sedans/saloons just didn't do rear wipes due the vortex business and the fact that the motors get in the way. If that's a real aftermarket thing then shirley someone must have drilled the glass!

It does seem to be the way that European brands have laid the options on thick, so they can flog them as a luxury choice. Very little pov-spec Eurochod here.

'ave summore, you 'orrible lot!

P1260986.jpg

We are on floor 14 this year, four floors above our room last year, from where I spotted the Corolla wagon in the same place.

Getting closer...

P1260981.jpg

Last year:

P1220494.JPG

I want to get the 850's wheels repainted, so today I made an excuse to visit the workshop. They advertise spraying at the lane end.

P1270002.jpg

I make that a Bertone Mazda Luce, such a pretty shape from the mid 1960's. Ahead of its time.

Having a nose around inside the shed:

P1260997.jpg

I bet this 405 shifts if they've got that lump running right. I think it's from a MR2 Turbo (fitted backwards?)!

P1260995.jpg

P1260999.jpg

P1260994.jpg

P1270001.jpg

I've seen this out and about a few times, and previously papped, but I can't remember if it has been posted before.

P1170890.JPG

I do remember enjoying the fact it's sporting a useful brake upgrade, and wondering if it's hiding anything else interesting under its pearly white skin.

P1170892.JPG

A few more random spots...

P1220142.jpg

I enjoyed the alloys on this 626. Have another navy three door Corolla:

P1220700.jpg

This AX may be a re-spot - it's possibly the only one around - I've certainly shown you a similar one with its bonnet up, a few years back.

P1220722.jpg

P1220134.jpg

P1220149.jpg

P1220805.jpg

P1220768.jpg

P1220115.jpg

P1220598.jpg

Catch of the Day:

P1220397.jpg

Say what you like about 'em, I think this is one very good looking vehicle.

P1220398.jpg

Thanks for watching!

I love this thread :D

Daewoo Fantasy? Says it all 8)

What's going on with the pop up lights on that 280Z or whatever it is? Has it had a Mk1 RX-7 schnozz wobbed on the front or something? Cracking pic anyway: if we're starting nominations for the 2012 calendar already than that's on my list.

Thanks for your comments...

I dare Scooters to drive this back from Thailand
As I said, that CX pic is a year or two old now, and it is now in paint... I'll snap you an update when I can.

Check out his pair:

P1270074.jpg

They were inside a shopping mall advertising a chain of embroidery / knitting shops.

P1270073.jpg

Their tea-cosies were completely hand-crocheted and fit fairly well. Someone has had a lot of spare time on their hands.

Speaking of craftsmanship...

I'd have thought that drives really nicely. n't.

Mrs KJ phrased it well: "Ha ha ha, ridiculous!"

The last few days I've been on a rented Honda Dream, which is GR8 4 SPOTTIN!

Cooking grade Lancers of this shape are all over, but I've never seen one as sheddy as this, so worth sharing.

P1270109.jpg

This Publica I think is one I've papped before in the same part of town, but it looks to have had a fresh layer of yellow applied.

P1270113.jpg

What looks like a four door Almera is a 'Sunny Super Saloon'. BTW Nissan have just started selling a new saloon labeled 'Almera', but it's not a shape I know, maybe a facelifted four door Tiida.

I was well pleased to get this shot:

P1270090.jpg

The old boy with his converted Mazda 1000 pick-up is still running the gauntlet with the bigger red taxis around the city. Chiang Mai is famous for them, and the drivers' 'union' is notoriously powerful. All the others are based on Isuzu / Toyota one ton diesels. Oh and yes, he was nodding off!

P1270134.jpg

Catch of the Day is this interesting little collection.

P1270129.jpg

The gardener saw me peering through the fence, he waved me in for a closer look.

P1270132.jpg

Sorry I can't tell you more, we were late for a lunch with friends, so didn't root around.

P1270140.jpg

The charabanc was my favourite with its original Thai plates.

P1270141.jpg

And that's Mrs KJ trying to be patient.
