Thanks egg, the ex-Datsuncog Impala taxi is in its component parts and an order has been placed with Steve Flowers so I'm itching to get stuck in

So we had an old Lesney with a broken bonnet..

post-20084-0-94006000-1529233531.jpg

A new bonnet was sourced from Steve Flowers, and a fancy paint job was completed, but I Hoovered up the engine! A breaker was procured...

IMG_20180710_125046.jpg

Engine transplant was completed, however it won't fit together quite right either leading to a permanently raised bonnet or gap betwixt base and rear of the body. Ummmm.

Methinks new bonnet is to blame.

Some more fettling and now ready for glue and a couple of paint touch ups. Honestly, my paint jobs would not last long in the hands of a kid!

That's great! Have you tried riveting the base, sometimes it works if you can drill accurately enough.

Just drill out the rivet and use a small self tapping screw.

You need etch. I had awful problems with easily damaged paint until I started to use this stuff (between £6-8 for 500ml from your friendly local motor factor, and it'll do dozens of models)

0018766_autotek-etch-primer-aerosol.jpeg

Give the model a light coat of this, then your normal primer. Try and scratch a bit off with your fingernail. If it scratches off, don't bother painting the model - start again.

If it doesn't scratch off, your finished paint job should be quite robust.

^^

This.

And yes, all you need to do is give your diecast a light dusting.

Then prime with whatever primer is cheapest - hint - Poundshop.

After primerisation, use the Micro Mesh finishing kit, but only the coarser three grades.

Then shoot it with paint and be amazed.

I forgot to tell you guys to use the Micro Mesh finishing kit only with a liberal dose of water with a splash of washing up liquid added.

This is important!

Good tips on the primer, chaps....I pick up a lot of half used rattle cans at car boots.   Look out for the giffer shed clearance blokes - you can usually work out their shite CV from the assorted cans of touch up amongst the blunt shears and rusted pliers.

I've just decommissioned some Lada police cars and filled the tiny holes in the roof with car body filler.  Blast of primer, then paint, they should be fine.

If it's a diecast, you can use putty. Everyone has his personal preference. I use instant scratch repair sold in small tubes.

The nice thing about diecasts (vs. plastic kits) is that you can't mess them up.

If your paint job turns out to be shit, strip it and start again.

it just does whenever i've done it - neither the metroid or bostin have recieved primer!

i watched something years* ago where they showed i think the lesney matchbox paint process and they never used ptimer just the model spinning through a spray paint "alley"

*and i mean something like 35-40 years ago- before we even had 4 channels!

That was lead enamel! It'll stick to anything, including your alveoes.

That newfangled non toxic shit they sell us nowadays just falls off my models if I don't use primer.
