Mash
More and more shite seems to be appearing at car shows these days which is great in my book. As we move on in time, it's now acceptable to take your 80s car to a show. Heaven forbid, even a JAPANESE car from the 80s will get through the gates. Whatever next?! Here are some highlights from a recent do at Bridlington where the usual crop of 30s and 50s cars was very much depleted in favour of newer machinery I noticed. I suppose this is inevitable. Pre-war cars are nice but not everyone's cup of tea now. Cortina with black vinyl seats to burn your bare legs on! Later car very tidy Beautifully restored tipper. Hard to believe 20 years old. Excellent DeLorean. This one was in Ashes to Ashes. I saw it at Asda a few weeks ago Nice Dyane, rare these days. My dad's mate had one like this when I was a kid. Very smart Crapi I had use of this Maxi while it was for sale last year. Nice to see it's gone to a good home after a bit of an uncertain few months. Drives extremely well. Some sort of US shite (equivalent of Avenger GT perhaps!) with funky interior Very non-scene T3 bus (disabled lifts and such) One for Pog here. Belongs to my dad's neighbour. GR8 4 SELLING DEAR ON EBAY Shiny Always wanted a 5-series like this, though not white. This one a 535i. Ultimate bus-shite. A rare local survivor. Was quite taken with this coach. Better proportions than the longer version. Couple of 2 wheelers. I'm getting a liking for old J-bikes... And 3 wheels too. Groovy man Need a break for an ice cream Bet this hasn't seen much action. Road tyres and petrol engine. http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j188/1300mash/East%20Coast%20Run%202008/IMG_3972.jpg Scirocco a local car, not seen it before. Liking a lot. http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j188/1300mash/East%20Coast%20Run%202008/IMG_3975.jpg Very straight Manta http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j188/1300mash/East%20Coast%20Run%202008/IMG_3980.jpg Clean Leyland. http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j188/1300mash/East%20Coast%20Run%202008/IMG_3983.jpg Pair of J-vans http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j188/1300mash/East%20Coast%20Run%202008/IMG_3987.jpg This XR4x4 was rather smart with RS accessories. http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j188/1300mash/East%20Coast%20Run%202008/IMG_3993.jpghttp://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j188/1300mash/East%20Coast%20Run%202008/IMG_3992.jpg GR8 4 LIFE ON MARSActually this was the stunt car's pretty double in the series. http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j188/1300mash/East%20Coast%20Run%202008/IMG_3995.jpg Understeer? http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j188/1300mash/East%20Coast%20Run%202008/IMG_3998.jpg Another cone before we finish? http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j188/1300mash/East%20Coast%20Run%202008/IMG_3999.jpg And from the car park another local car still with dealer plates on it. http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j188/1300mash/East%20Coast%20Run%202008/IMG_4004.jpghttp://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j188/1300mash/East%20Coast%20Run%202008/IMG_4005.jpg
pompei
Nice pics! Was that the East Coast run from East Park to Brid? (GR8 4 HOLDING UP TRAFFIC)I know that Scirocco. It belonged for a while to a mate of mine who used it to replace his Astra when he got divorced Another bloke in the office had a Renault 14 with a similar plate, TKH 496W, although he'd sold it on by then for a Sierra ...It later went to one of my neighbours, although by this time it was looking quite sad.I did hear that it had been clocked, so gawd knows how many miles it has done
Guest
That brings back memories. Had one in 97 the same as this-even the wheeltrims. A cracker of a car that wouldnt die despite much abuse. Very rare now though.
Mash
I spotted this similar one at the York Racecourse show last year. It was for sale and was just so straight, only 35000 miles. It wasn't polished up or detailed but was amazingly solid and rust free. This low mileage slush-box Ascona was also at Brid on Sunday but I didn't take a snap ther as I already had a few of it. Thought it worthy of inclusion though as it is ABSOLUTLEY MINT.
Spottedlaurel
Lovely selection there Mash. Definitely agree that it's good to see more of our kind of stuff at the shows. Wonder who's going to go for the older stuff though? I'm tempted by the thought of some '50s grey porridge, fancy going slowly round country roadds with a nice whiny transmission. I saw some kind of railway repair unit last weekend which was largely bodied using one of these, very strange to see it on rails! Was on the North Norfolk Railway between Sheringham and Holt, no easy way of getting a pic sadly.
mk2_craig
That Sed-Atki is rare as a tipper surely, most if not all of those I've seen have been bin wagons, I wonder if that one used to be.Centre entrance coach would have been a very unusual layout by the time that was built (looks like a P-suffix), GR8 4 SITTIN NEXT 2 DRIVA.Some lovely other things you've captured there, loving the Manta in particular. Mr Lobster
Nice spottage there! I'd agree that its nice to see more '80's cars at shows, personally I'm really not interested in seeing much in the way of 30s / 40s / 50s stuff as it holds little interest for me. It might horrify the classic purists but the more 70s and 80s cars the better as far as I'm concerned.Leyland National, Sierra, Dyanne and Manta my favorites! bigstraight6
Nice variety selection there, the Valencia blue Triumph 2000 looks tasty as does the Leyland Clydesdale lorry. The impressive brace of 'Annies' ice cream vans have a well used look about them....
Mr_Bo11ox
On the subject of trucks, I am amazed to see that you can still buy an ERF truck (although i understand these are a MAN truck in all but name) , and there are 52-plate Foden trucks driving about, i though both these classic UK truck marques would have been mismanaged into oblivion years ago. r.welfare
Wonderful photos! The Orion GLs are really floating my boat at the moment, fantastic. Rio Brown as well! That 535i looks lush - I like white (or Alpinweiss in BMW speak) on these when they are as tidy as that; my C-plate 528i I owned six years ago was the spit of this one. Looks like they have swapped the metric alloys for imperial ones, a sensible decision when it comes to the cost of tyres...Pretty sure that white Mk3 Tina estate was featured in the "For Sale" bit of PC a few years back, if I remember correctly it is a 1300 which can't be GR8 4 HAULIN.2-litre Scrote Ghia looks tastefully done, too. pogweasel
Some sort of US shite (equivalent of Avenger GT perhaps!) with funky interior A -bit- fruiter than an Avenger GT Top-spec ones of these have ferocious acceleration. And I doff my cap to anyone with deep enough pockets and big enough balls to drive one in the current climate..... 9mpg! At best!!!

Was on the North Norfolk Railway between Sheringham and Holt, no easy way of getting a pic sadly.[anorak]The BR Class 140-144 DMUs were built on Leyland National chassis, using TL11 engines. They don't look a lot like Nationals, but they do sound like a National with a badly slipping fluid flywheel when pulling out of stations. The LEV-1 prototype, though, did use a National I body. [/anorak] I only know this because I had an OO-scale Pacer as part of my train set when I was a kid, and I did some research on them at the time. vicsmith
That Xr4x4 belongs to the guy I get all my valeting supplies from - I gave him those wheels in exchange for a weeks work of cockpit shine, tyre foam and all sorts of crap like that. He`s always telling me how much nicer than mine his Sierra is, and well, by the look of it, it is.Some fantastic Orion coverage there, too.Wonder what is happening to all the pre-war stuff? Are these shows doubling in size or are they just getting slung?

Mash
I think Hino have taken over a lot of the Foden franchises. They certainly upped their presence at the Commercial Vehicle show after the Foden announcement.
Split_Pin
Great pics - the black Orion is definetley my Favourite though. The BREL Railcoach is covered in some detail in my Leyland National Book - i dont know if there ar any left in passenger service though

They certainly upped their presence at the Commercial Vehicle show after the Foden announcement.IIRC Hinos are assembled in Ireland. Very popular amongst gravel/quarry/sand lugging firms .Think the company is linked to Toyota - they did make cars in the 1960s, based on Renaults? martc
Hello all, I'm new to this game so lets hope it goes well.....Foden stopped making lorries a couple of years ago (after exactly 150 years production). Since then Hinos have become very common - have you noticed how many 4 axle rigid Hino's are on the road now? They are an obvious replacement for Fodens, who used to specialise in this configuration. As for ERF..... as I understand it, they were sold to MAN in 2000. ERF have moved to a new factory in Middlewich and are now concentrating on producing vehicles for the MOD - to replace their Bedfords and Leylands. Judging by the amount of MANs operated by the MOD at the Defence Driving School near Beverley I guess ERF/MAN have a lucrative contract. For the last few years ERF badged MAN tractor units where made in Germany - are they still available? or has the ERF badge been quietly dropped?Talking of demised British lorries - there is a nearly new Atkinson badged Iveco dustbin cart being operated by East Riding of Yorkshire Council - whats the story behind this? Are Iveco badging up their lorries with old brands to satisfy our aged, stick in the mud burghars - what next a revival of SD or Karrier?
Monkey_boy
I'm 99.9% sure this used to be owned by my uncle. It was an abslolute minter. Everything was original. He sold it as he never used it and he needed the space. He bought it as a 'weekend car' from a garage in Nafferton up near the east coast.

mk2_craig
Iveco have owned Seddon Atkinson for some time, their website makes (limited) reference to the availability of the brand but it appears the vehicles are made in Spain these days.
martc
Looking at the link, kindly posted by Mr Bollox, (http://forums.mg-rover.org/showthread.php?t=86347), it would seem ERF's new factory only lasted 3 years - I wonder how much rate/tax payers money (and the hopes of the workers) went into setting it up in the first place? only for it to go down the pan so quickly, it sounds quite scandolous to my ears. The Austrian built MANs, which must be the ones drivern by the squaddie learners, could be made at the old OAF factory (now owned by MAN) or perhaps by Steyr -they used to supply the cabs for rigid ERF's. These always seemed to be carrying skips - there was one locally but it's been replaced by a Turkish BMC - another shite connection!
