Ireland is not old-car friendly. Insurance and tax are absurd on anything over ten years old. Not sure if it's the same both sides of the border, but it's certainly no fun if you want to run an older car daily there.

North of border is part of the UK, same laws / taxes / duty etc and covered by the same DVLA etc so pretty much the same experience as you lot have. Although I suspect insurance is a bit cheaper here for some reason?

Talking of Ireland, I returned from a two week trip there this morning, in which I managed to get some pictures of shite (these will be posted on the lazy spotters thread at some point). I have to agree with everything said about Ireland regarding older cars, it is extortionate. Tax is stupidly expensive on certain models and insurance is even more of a rip off than usual once a car is more than 10 years old.

Anyway, I digress. When I got back, I was pleased to see the 75 again after using the Focus for so long. Although I think the Focus is a decent car, it didn't waft quite as well as the Rover (it didn't go to Ireland as it was having a new clutch put in as the old one was knackered). Needless to say, I took it for a spin to test it out and enjoyed every minute of it. I had forgotten how nice it is to waft along in it. I am on the lookout for some paint for it and hope to sort out a few of the scratches it has picked up in the last year of commuting whilst the weather is alright over the next few days.

I am no longer a member of the rover SD1 club but the secretary sent me an email enquiring if I still owned my car as the son of the first owner had been in touch asking if the car was still around and if it was for sale.

No. Having spent all day at a Toyota show, Mrs DW is threatening mutiny if we don't do some actual holiday stuff. Fair enough.

Mrs barmatt has been hooning around in the Roffle renault safrane recently, ( I think she secretly loves it as I can't get it off her) last night she picks me up straight from work to go to brother in laws 40th birthday at his house about 10 miles away. When we arrive steam starts to piss from the bonnet. After letting it cool down I manage to remove the split hose to see if it can be repaired/bodged to get us home later....

hmm... BiL doesn't have any tools to speak of but he has a roll of gaffer tape...

No way is that going to cope with the pressure, what can we do? blag some cable ties off the neighbour and hey presto....

Mint! got us home no problem, looks factory to me.

Finally get garage clear enough to get 320 SLK on ramp for ATF/filter change,

Missing jacking pad... WTAF.

(Edit: Four Febi jacking points, £19. I can wait until they arrive, the others are pretty chewed up too).

I'm afraid to investigate further in case there's no sill behind the plastic trims - it's already got proper 1970s giffer wob in the roof panel and rust everywhere.

It's eye-opening seeing what utter dreck a cheap SLK can be; current frame of mind doesn't help; going to run this blasted thing into the ground and get my money's worth out of it.

Think it needs a thread at some point!

Making a French van more Britanique and more voiture.
Headlight treatment (toothpaste and bicarb) didn't seem to help the cheap RHD headlights I found sadly.
