I went to a gathering of over 350 Toyotas in Ireland, and it was bloody awesome!

Most Shiteworthy car there was definitely this two-tone Carina II diesel. Amazing.

The millennium falcon (sorry I don't normally do car names but it came to me on the peripherique) has touched down in Reims. Lovely town and a really nice rustic non chain hotel. Stopped off at the Le Mans museum and perved over their martini 917LH. Now enjoying a beer. I really like this merc (translation- I will sell it in 2 weeks no doubt)

The Skoda Favorit freeway (the one that's been about on ebay for ages) has finally sold to a Favorit licker, and should now be saved (she has 3 now)...I think this counts as good news as they are virtually extinct.

Passenger side Hydragas pipe removal on the Princess.  Urgh.  Have to partially drop the rear axle and remove the schrader valve at the front for clearance to drop the pipe off the car.  I'd been warned this is one of those jobs you don't do unless you have to and I can see why now.

You're 21, living with mummy and daddy, and acting like a bit of a spoilt prick of a 15 year old. Maybe show your dad a bit of gratitude and get on with enjoying the car he's just bought you.

Otherwise ship out and let your folks enjoy their house and money together. Christ.

I appreciate what you're saying, and I do have trouble with filtering myself, but I have very good reasons for living at home, life hasn't been running as smoothly as possible for me, I think is the simplest way of saying it. I have a job, I earn my own money, and I'm doing my best to get by. Home life isn't the easiest thing ever due to a multitude of reasons, and I'm not going to go into detail on a public forum about why things are the way they are, but it's really not as simple as what I write here. I have a great deal of resentment towards the person I have to call my dad whether I believe he's worthy of that title or not, and my mother is mentally ill, you could argue that I am too.

I don't wish for anything else to be said about it, and I have no issue with anyone on this forum. I have my arrangements, I have my car, and that's that. Let's leave it at that.

Just saw a Mazda 323 BF in the centre of Cork. In three days in Ireland, its by far the eldest car I've seen in use away from the Toyota show. Very poor Shite spotting. No pic because shit camera phone.

However, I did find this outside a wine bar some hours ago. It's still there.

Ireland is not old-car friendly.  Insurance and tax are absurd on anything over ten years old.  Not sure if it's the same both sides of the border, but it's certainly no fun if you want to run an older car daily there.

I did wonder if there are restrictions on use once over 30, when stuff no longer needs MOT or tax.

HMS LEXBARGE IS REPORTING FOR DUTY!
IMG_3167.JPG

After 8 months in storage (a family friends barn) and the only check up it's had was said family friend making sure the barn was intact...it started first time, with just a wee bit of spluttering.
Forgot just how quickly it gains speed with little effort, and how comfy she is.

Will be giving it a proper check over when at work on Monday, just to be 100% everything is okay still, just for peace of mind.

Was trying to find out more on the Irish tax rules and over 30 years old it's actually very cheap.  It's the 10-29 year old bracket that seems to get hammered.

From a Renault 11 thread over on the blue: http://forum.retro-r...enault-11-gtl-1
"Indeed. Welcome to the rip off island nation where they keep telling us our taxes are lower than most of Europe as if it's some sort of excuse or consolation for dumping on the common tax payer... Yeah sure I believe you Mr. Kenny... I was insured for €550 at the age of 23 here in Ireland on the R11 before it was a classic. I went to NY for just over 3 years, came back and they chose to ignore the fact that I was insured over there and the only company that would quote me on a 1999 corolla (AXA) wanted €2200 for insurance alone. Everybody else said me and the car were too high risk for them to even consider! I'm nearly 28 with no convictions and 9 years on my licence! Yes a silver bug-eyed unloved cockroach shaped liftback Corolla was high risk. That and the €514 in tax for a piddly 1.6l engine. Don't even get me started! Oh and lets not forget the NCT! Tell me it's not biased after you bring a car over 15 years old in and the test takes 45 minutes as they tap every inch of the car looking for nonexistant filler when a five year old car goes through in under 15 minutes with barely a second look and most things seemingly skipped over.
People of the UK and USA, you are very, very lucky!"

North of border is part of the UK, same laws / taxes / duty etc and covered by the same DVLA etc so pretty much the same experience as you lot have. Although I suspect insurance is a bit cheaper here for some reason?

Talking of Ireland, I returned from a two week trip there this morning, in which I managed to get some pictures of shite (these will be posted on the lazy spotters thread at some point). I have to agree with everything said about Ireland regarding older cars, it is extortionate. Tax is stupidly expensive on certain models and insurance is even more of a rip off than usual once a car is more than 10 years old.

Anyway, I digress. When I got back, I was pleased to see the 75 again after using the Focus for so long. Although I think the Focus is a decent car, it didn't waft quite as well as the Rover (it didn't go to Ireland as it was having a new clutch put in as the old one was knackered). Needless to say, I took it for a spin to test it out and enjoyed every minute of it. I had forgotten how nice it is to waft along in it. I am on the lookout for some paint for it and hope to sort out a few of the scratches it has picked up in the last year of commuting whilst the weather is alright over the next few days.

Mrs barmatt has been hooning around in the Roffle renault safrane recently, ( I think she secretly loves it as I can't get it off her) last night she picks me up straight from work to go to brother in laws 40th birthday at his house about 10 miles away. When we arrive steam starts to piss from the bonnet. After letting it cool down I manage to remove the split hose to see if it can be repaired/bodged to get us home later....
