HillmanImp
Just got back from picking this up from Nottingham: Is a 1 owner, 82k FSH for under £300. The original Pirrelli alloys are worth more than that. Lovin' it. Engine is getting warmer than i would like (not overheating, just warmer) so will check for likely causes over the weekend and it is making what sounds like a rubbing noise from the back. Think this is probably the wheel bearing and will get this replaced as soon as i get hold of one. All in all, i am totally feeling the love. Milford Cubicle
They are quite keen on head gasket failure, so get the overheating sorted.I quite fancy one of these, I'm surprised you can still get a half-decent one for £300.
Guest
Nice to see one that isn't a total scened up thing. Christ, I'm turning into an old man.
Milford Cubicle
The same thought passed my mind too Hirst, and I'm younger than you.
Spottedlaurel
Looks good to me, and I have an irrational dislike of VW's due to the things so many people do to them. Great to see one so standard, Sciroccos do seem to be a bit overlooked - a friend had an incredibly clean one and said it might only be worth £400 or so (though I think he may have been a bit pessimistic about it, and had his view changed by the £10k+ Bay Window camper he owned). Mr Lobster
That looks nice and yes nice to see it hasn't been thoroughly chav'd up!They do like to do headgaskets though - worked at a VW dealer in the early 90's (and now I feel very old!) and there were plenty of them coming in. Nice car when they are sorted though.

Pillock
Incredibly overlooked. They're a Mk1 Golf at heart, and if you get an injected one they go like stink... 112bhp and 800kg or something? A lot of fun. Parts are usually common to other VWs so will rarely shock you at GSF, and there's only a few weak spots (fuel filler pipe rusts, and the clutch cable tears through the bulkhead)They usually look better as VW intended too, I hardly ever see a nice 'modded' one although Mk2s with all the trim removed in a racer-stylee look mean.Prices are still rock bottom, no scene tax on these! I strugged to get £425 for my very tidy 1984 Storm - that's the desirable special edition in metallic poo brown, leather interior, 1.8i engine, electrics and stuff. It had zero rust, masses of history, a full years MoT and everything!

Mr_Bo11ox
Hey i've got a great idea for that, just thought of it actually. Sand off all the lacquer, bust the headlights and put odd wheels on it, it'll look AWESOMEOh and put a roofrack on, ME TOO! I HAVE GOT A ROOFRACK TOO!! LOOK! Then get bored and stick it on Volkszone for £1500.
reallyloud
Now thats a bargain, perfectly snatched under the noses of the scene kids. Very clean looking designs in bare form.I still can't get around my head why the air cooled VW scene is like it is, there seems to be an awful lot that smug self-congratulatory scene that celebrates itself vibe about it all. r.welfare
Try taking the radiator out and giving it a good flush, that might sort the overheating problem. Change the thermostat too, to be on the safe side - they're cheap enough that I always change 'em (plus the rad flush and refill, then a full service) on any motors I buy as soon as I get them home. wuvvum
Nice one. I do like Sciroccos. Every old Volkswagen I've ever owned (and I've had a few) has run hot, but I've never once had one overheat. They've all had spongy brakes too.
HillmanImp
Glad it has been met with approval. It was from Flea bay with N/R. The listing had nothing about the FSH or that it was 1 owner etc. They focused on its negative points such as some tatty paintwork (seems pretty good to me) and did not list its plus points. Look at all the invoices! It is totally original, the ariel still comes up when you turn on the stereo (How cool!) and the interior is immaculate. I also think I have found the reason why it was getting warm. The radiator fan does not seem to be working. I am going to hunt down a wiring diagram online shortly and check the fuse (although would the fan fuse be used for anything else too?) but even getting a new or used fan will be easy as i assume they are standard VW parts. The heater is blowing warm and there is not mix of the oil and water so the head gasket seems okay (i am used to head gasket failure driving Imps). I am going to change all the fluids over the weekend anyhow as they will probably need doing. I agree the brakes are slightly scary, but like anything you get used to them. Need to replace the shocks i think as it is shocking on the awful roads in Leeds, but they still cost nowt. So looking forward to cruising around in this over the summer. Already getting loads of cool looks of people and the kids next door are facinated. Definately not going to do out horrible to it. Somebody has put a lot of time and effort into keeping this car over the years. Would be a shame to ruin it. Still cant believe no VW nuts noticed the wheels when it was up for auction. Volksy
I have a mate who is well into these, so may have a few parts...If you want me to have a look at the fan let me know.
mk2_craig
Sounds like you got an absolute bargain there, well done. Proves that tidy runners with potential are still out there cheap!
HillmanImp
Just a big thanks to Volksy who gave me a call to help correctly diagnose the faulty radiator switch before i replaced half the car trying to figure out what was causing it. Not overheating now.Still seem to be repairing and replacing stuff on an almost daily basis, however it is still proving to be worthwhile as i can do it all myself which is half the point of buying old shite. Getting all the parts dirt cheap too. Even new they cost bugger all, and there is plenty of scrap about.
